I HATE retention flaps, however it is hard to find a good open top mag pouch compatible with the ak mags. The taco looked like a good innovation. I was thinking of something like that before the taco ever came out.
I have used open top single m4 shingles for a while. I cut the bungee off. They've never fallen out just sometimes the get caught on the fabric coming out because of the ak's locking lugs on the magazines.
I'm thinking about taking a piece of half inch band iron and putting it down in the pouch to do the same thing the kydex in the taco pouches does. Allow a smooth easy extraction. I'll rivet the band iron in at the very bottom, fold it out the top of the pouch and rivet it into the side of the pouch. The rivet should counter sink a little if installed correctly so it won't grab the locking piece of the ak mag.
Anyone ever tried anything like this? If so how did it work?
I just don't wanna pay 30 dollars for a single magazine pouch!

Give it a try. Also, I've used Condor AK mag pouches with the flap, just tuck the flap in and the mag will stay in place through most activities that I'm going to try.

I bought some of the HSGI TACOs a few weeks ago. They are unbelievably difficult to install, and once in use I find them just OK. Retention is decent, but inserting mags can be difficult. Not sure I would buy again. From both firsthand use and reading others' comments I think the plain old fabric pouch with some elastic on the outside works as well or better than most other options.

Yeah I heard they were rough to Molle in. And I like the idea of plain fabric. That's what I use now. I just find it catching sometimes. Everyonceinawhile it actually grabs, usually when reaching all the way across my body for a mag. I don't want that happening under stress.

Update.
It didn't work. It made the mag pouch way too tight. And because the steel ak mag is harder than the soft bnd iron material it bit into the band iron and stuck on extraction.

I can make u some out of kydex, it would be the same design that I use in pmags. It allows good retention with the ability to pull the mag with minimal effort

I run HSGI Open Top Modular double mag pouches. I am considering going to a Taco with pistol mag.

Besides being difficult to attach, why were they only OK? Online most people rave about them.

Hey guys my most economical option was a universal industries universal chest rig. I got it for 35 bucks. They generally sell for 80-100! It is excellent it can hold up to 8 m4 mags or 8 ak mags. Extraction is extremely fast and smooth even with eight ak mags. I was very impressed.
