How about a Remington 700 SPS, in .308,in a Bell and Carlson stock , with a Leupold Mk 2 6x18 scope in Warne rings on top a Nightforce base. About $1200 all together. Group is 1 3/8 at 300 yards. My Homeland security rifle.

nice looking rifles, ussr and blitzen

blitzen, did you take that picture during the 6 months of darkness up there? or just couldn't wait til morning? :)

nice group, too

never heard of a 6x18 scope. is your objective lens really only 18mm?

guys, let's limit this discussion to the rifle and skip the silly, sarcastic semantics

Where is the fun in that this is the internet after all

If we must focus on the rifles then I recommend doing a SEI Crazy Horse build based on either an LRB M25 rear lugged receiver or a Chinese M14 receiver. For the optics go for a IOR 3-18x42 Tactical 35mm Rifle Scope.

What brand and at what price should I be looking for?

No, sorry, but it's impossible to do it that way. You tell us the price range and what you're trying to accomplish (how much accuracy; how much rifle weight, etc.), and then we can make recommendations. As it stands, your question is way too wide open. So I'll say Cheytac Intervention rifle at $11,000 for the win, Alex.

A minor clarification:

M24 and M40 are not quite the same...

M40: 308, Remington 700 short action, 1 in 12" twist

M24: most are 308 (some are 300 WinMag), all of them are long actions, even the 308's, 1 in 11.25" twist for the 308, 1 in 10" twist for the 300 WM.

Building an M24 can be done...but it will require that you use a long action, not the short ones usually associated with the 308.

Go for a good solid Remington 700 action or second choice would be a Howa. There are all kinds of good barrels out there, but I like Krieger and Shilen personally. Stock choice is really up to you. A good Bell and Carlson or a HS, or even a good laminate. My .308 project is near completion with a member here (BigAlAZ) doing the bluing for me.

Well Dr. Tadd, i will disagree with you this time. The barrett Model 99 in .416 beats the cheytac in almost every way, (is single shot, but barrett is suppossed to be making a .416 mod 95 IIRC) there is no contest. A whole 2" less drop at 500yd! :D:D:D Really, it is better, the cartridge and the rifle. And cheaper. MUCH cheaper.
Other than that, i second what you said.:D

As for a "regaular" PMR (precision marksman rifle, sounds cooler than "sniper rifle" too) i would look at the savage F/TR and the F-class rifles, they are the best bang for the buck IMO.

Exhibit A:

Smith Enterprise, Inc. M21A5 Crazy Horse EBR built on a heel stamped Poly Tech receiver.

Every time you show that effing M14 I think, "my wife will not miss the tax return this year".

Can I get you to talk to my wife and tell her she would be crazy not to jump at this great investment opportunity especially in light of the current economic situation?

Sure, no problem :)

I hope this thread lasts for awhile, Im learning alot, so keep it coming guys and say it like it is, if the SHTF I'll know who to stay close to and who to...

The picture was taken in the fall as the leaves on the ground would indicate. And it is a 6x18 variable power scope. I wanted to keep it man portable and working man afordable, and still able to hit an IDPA target at about 800 yards. I haven't worked it out that far yet but this summer I will. last year was just getting it all together and a little hand load development. Keep in mind OP, that you don't need to mortgage the farm to get to have a good shooter. Start with something good and build on it. And even then it often comes down to the trigger puller. I have shot alongside guys who have M40 or whatever copies with high dollar barrels and I was pretty unimpressed by the results.
Submitted from the last great free state in the union!!!

DPMS SASS .308 or maybe the full 24" stainless length if you are just going to be shooting from your belly or a bench.

They are quite possibly the most accurate semi auto under $3000 out of the box.

:)

blitzen, nice paint job ... did you do it yourself? I'd like to get a few of my rifles/scopes painted but Leupold voids the warranty if you paint the scope. There's only one shop in the country that can paint their scopes without voiding the warranty so I was thinking of sending him a couple of scopes with the rings/caps mounted and then painting the stocks/barrels/actions to match.

:)

I did paint it myself and I'm not worried about the warrenty cuz I've never seen a Leupold go bad. Butt, if mine goes bad I will take some paint thinner to it and clean it up before I send it back. If they don't like that I'll be on there door step, and they won't like that. I've done my part over the years to support them.

Double-A

If you are serious about long range precision shooting out to say 1000meters look into a medium/long barreled Remmy action in .308 from Tac-Ops and a S&B or USO scope. You will have to wait at least a year or maybe two for a new one (you may also get lucky and find a built Tac-Ops rifle but you cold also hit the lottery) but his longarms are gauranteed to hold 1/4MOA using factory Black Hill ammunition. Some folks will claim there is NFW Mikes guns are 1/4MOA but the fact is that Tac-Ops rifles are better than the vast majority of shooters. You will never out grow a TacOps long arm. To get much past 1000meters you will need something with more zip.

HTH!

Isn't the M24 or the M40 just a Remington 700 action with match barrel on a glass bedded McMillan stock??

No...not quite anyway.

The M40's are customized a bit (trued actions and all that stuff) and have Schneider barrels.

The M24's are pretty much the same as any other Remington, except they all have a long action, 1 in 11.25" twist (in 308), and a much better stock. M24 barrels are made in Ilion, NY...just like yours, mine, and everybody else's.

what do you want to do with your precision rifle ?
compete?
hunt?
cuddle up in bed going my precious, my precious :)D it is unfair to mock bench rest shooters but as it takes them so long to reload you can be out of range before they can retaliate:D)

One might never know How He will have to use his "precision rifle" or if he will have to use it at all. This dosn't mean he shouldn't own one AND know how to use it well, just in case!:)
