Opinion of the Nylon 66?

Nylon 66

I bought one back in about 1966 or 67 and kept it for a short period due to a relative would not leave me alone until I let him buy it. I regretted it ever since . Would like another for my gradson.

Had a Nylon '77 once and did not have good luck keeping the scope sighted in. It would group in a different place every time I took it out. The barrel is not attached to where the scope is mounted on the receiver cover. Someone earlier mentioned this. Also my brother has a '66 which probably hasn't had 5 boxes of shells through it since he got it in 1966. Also, if I remember right, these actions were not to be lubed. I think it stated so in the owner's manuals.

Wanted one as a kid when they came out, around 1959 or so. However I already had one good .22 and that was all anybody needed in those days.

Finally picked up a nice one at a gun show, and not long thereafter a beater. The beater worked just fine although it looked bad. Used automotive rubbing compound to take the scratches out of the stock, located the missing parts, polished all the pits out of the reciever cover, reblued all the metal, and today it looks just about new.

They're sort of like a '57 Chevy--lots of memories and still a lot of fun.

Not to mention a lot cheaper.

Think I'll take mine out next go-around.

I realize they are tough, light, and very fun to shoot (I rescued grandpa's from the barn after we finally got the cat problem under control, and cleaned it up, then just kind of claimed it as mine) but you have to admit, it has a cheap feel and is not all htat solid feeling of a rifle. Not saying it's bad, so don't flame me on that one, but as a Nylon 76 I have to wonder if its any higher quality, because I can only imagine how crappy that lever must feel if it's of the same grade as the original. Did the 76 have a solid feeling lever or was it as thin and floppy as I'm imagining?

I had one and sold it. Always regretted that. I wish Remington had kept making them. I just saw one at the gunshow sell for $330!

Get yourself a PatchWorm for cleaning and you're all set. It's less than $10 and lets you clean from the breech without having to strip the gun. Or do like many rimfire competitors do, and don't clean the bore at all, just the action to keep it reliable.
