Don't know about what would be NJ compliant, but if I could only have keep one in the under $2000 price range it'd be my SIG 716.

In order to be NJ legal you may have to get a 30 caliber muzzle loading upper lol

Fondled a Sig 716 at Cabela's on Friday. Beautiful weapon. Better than the SCAR 17 I also took a look at. As both are well outside my price point, I'll be getting the PTR 91F as my MBR and use my Super Vepr in a DMR roll.

Certainly for the price. But believe it or not the SCAR 17S has less felt recoil than does my SIG 716 despite the SCAR having only iron sights while my 716 had 1.5 lbs of scope and mount -- its muzzle break is really that effective, but its no fun at all to be next to it when shooting.

Wally,
Was talking about the way it fit me. Also "felt" more solid/seemed better finish but ymmv. Your practical review of both is why I enjoy THR so thoroughly! Free reviews and advice (usually) worth well above what we pay for it :)

Are you looking for a precision rifle or more a general purpose rifle? The new S&W MP10 is pretty nice for a general purpose rifle.

Js8588:
If you are going with PTR for mbr why not look at one of the lighter options than the F? I have the F and its weight with optic has me thinking its more of a dmr. A classic 18" or A3r would be perfect. The GI would be good too. The F is a heck of a gun though.

DVDCRR,
Oh, in about a year or so a PTR 91GI will be bought as a truck gun. It's on the list too, just a bit further down than this year's finances permit.

Back to what the OP requested: Were I in the market for an AR style 7.62 X 51, I'd go with the Ruger SR762

Personally when I was looking for a semi auto 308, I was really wanting an M1A, but saw a DPMS LR-308. I wasn't an AR fan until after I got it. It is sweet and a tack driver. Been extremely reliable too. Had it for about a year and a half and still shoots as sweet as day one.

I love my ruger 762. Modular handguard with rail section, three mags, soft case, hogue grip and Samson flip ups. They run right about 1700 before tax.

I've had a few DPMS 308's and they were good. Had a RRA Standard with a free float tube and it was crazy accurate! Their accuracy guarantee is no joke!
I'd love to have another AR in 308 once I get the $$$. I liked my DPMS and really liked the accuracy of my RRA but the Sig 716 looks aweful tempting! I'd like to have the dmr and a nice can.

Have a M1A national match lookin for Ar type good for 200 yds and CQB.Already have .223 Ar-15 gun. Thanks for all info so far,but remember Nj compliant...thanks Don

Opinions.... AR platform 308 guns

Well we know what they say about opinions. My AR happens to be an AR10(T) Armalite that I built up around 20 years ago. I like it and it works for me as they say. Then too, I would probably like any of the other dozen or so flavors out there. I suggest you handle a few models and barrel lengths and see what trips your trigger and fits your budget.

Ron

I believe Ruger sells a CA compliant version of the Ruger 762. That should satisfy NJ requirements. No forward grip, fixed magazine, no folding stock, etc...

I have no personal experience but I've heard great reviews.
There is also a vendor on Gun Broker that sells NJ compliant Digs. Of course you'll be paying more for them. If I was in the market I'd go for the Ruger.

I also recommend the Ruger sr762. What a terrific rifle. I bought mine because I was previously so impressed with my sr556 in 6.8 spc. It's accurate, it runs like a Swiss watch. Leaves brass in a nice neat little pile next to you.

It actually might not. You can still get collapsible stocks on CA compliant rifles that have fixed magazines. S&W sells their M&P rifles in standard model, CA compliant model, and NJ/MD/CT compliant model. Anyway, Ruger's website does not currently list either a CA compliant nor a CT/NJ/MD compliant model of the SR 762.

I believe the SCAR 17 is the best all around .308 battle rifle by a margin. But in your stated price range I'd look at the Ruger SR-762 which had problems initially, but they have been worked out. Make sure you buy one that comes with Magpul Gen3 mags because the rifles that come with the Gen3 mags are the newest rifles and have the bugs worked out.

The DPMS is a very good shooter I had one for about 6 yrs never missed a beat, The cheaper way to go, The sig 716 is a great rifle, The S&W gets good reviews, The scar is a lot of peoples favorite, cheap plastic stock has been reported as a problem. The Colt it depends on what you want to do with it, Im not fond of the twist rate on a 16" barrel not really good for the heavier bullets, Being able to take ar15 uppers might be allright. LMT is very good worth looking at, If you have money LaRue and KAC are suppose to be top of the line. The problem with 308 is there are No mil spec everybody is doing their own thing and Not much is compatible some are monolithic so you cant change out rails. Study each one as they are all different. I have the Sig 716 DMR on order that is the one for me. YMMV
