Hi folks. I've been wanting to add a polymer to my collection. I tried the Glock's, but found the purchase to be a bit to wide for my liking. Living in CA I can't get the newer Gen4 that might give me options for a better grip. I handled, but wasn't able to shoot, a Springfield XD® 5″ Full Size Model 9mm. It felt good in my hands. I like to get your opinion of this gun.

I've got one of the first gen XD 9mm 5", Tactical I think it was called. I shot it in 3 gun for a while with no problems at all. It's been replaced now with a Six X6, but it retired to the bed side table for home defense. I also have one of the newer XDM 5.25" Match models which I like a little better since they squeezed 19 rounds in the mag. But to be honest it shoots no better then the older XD 9.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to call around to some of the ranges that rent guns. I'm thinking the gun will fine, but would like to shoot one first to be absolutely certain I'm going to enjoy it.

Unfortunately for me living in Cali we can't get the new guns. It sucks as we are stuck with older models. Our concern is at some point manufacturers will stop making them and we will be left with sling shots. :banghead:

It's a great platform, one of the top tier ones in my view. I like the aggressive texture, the grip safety, and the loaded chamber and cocked indicators. All very well done. Triggers are sometimes a bit too spongy for my liking but that's preference. The guns are generally considered reliable and accurate.

I have the 5" XD 9mm Tactical and it is one of only two stryker pistols I have and like it for a poly gun. In fact when we start being able to open carry on Jan 1st, i might use it (or my matte stainless CZ75B) for carry pistol because of the weight and capacity compared to my 1911's.

These were my favorite polymer pistols before the S&W M&P 5" came out. I just plain shot them better than my Glocks.

The XD and XDM are excellent guns and Springfield is a good company. I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon.

I've got two XDM's and they've both been reliable through several thousand rounds.

I was able to handle and shoot one over the weekend. I have liked the XD design for a long time now, but this one felt really good. I know feel is subjective. However, the accuracy was also very good. At 24 yards, I was able to put a magazine into a group the size of a tennis ball.

I was able to rent one this past Sunday. I really like the way it felt in my hand and the accuracy was very good. The grip safety was a little awkward at first, but I soon figured the best purchase to grasp the gun. The muzzle flip was minimal and I was able to quickly get back on target. The visual and tactical safety features are nice given I don't own styker type guns. I'm used to a hammer to tell me that a gun is cocked. I decided to buy the 5" Tatical model. Can't wait until the 10 days are up to pick it up.
