My BIL has taken a shine to my recently DAOd Taurus 605, and offered to trade a mossberg 270 for it, with a Simmons 3-9 on it. price-wise it comes out about the same, if it's in good shape, but I have no experience with bolt guns. It would fill a need in my collection, but is it a good rifle? (At least worth a nice Taurus snubby?)

Good go man

I've heard a lot of good and bad but that's heresay I've owned
Two myself think you landed pretty good man. I've not had a lot
come in for any gunsmithing to me so that's a good sign

All in all think u came out pretty good man Mine never had
problems low maintenece and fun to shoot accurate good gun

One of only 2 or 3 guns I'd advise no one to ever buy. Not that they are dangerous, or won't shoot straight, just a poor value for the dollar. They are disposable rifles intended for someone who wants to zero their gun and make a box of ammo last 5 years. At that rate they will last someone a lifetime and accuracy isn't bad.

But if you plan on shooting much more than that they won't hold up and are not worth the expense of getting them repaired. A problem that would be a simple repair on most other guns is going to cost more than the guns value. Which isn't much. They have virtually no resale value on the used market.

For the cost of 2-3 boxes of ammo there are much better options.

The 710 with its hydraulically-presssed barrel and mild-steel receiver is disposable. The 100ATR isn't. It is traditionally made just as the Savage 110 or the new crop of Marlin bolt guns. Resale is okay on these, nothing great, but if you pay $250 for one, you can get $225 or so resale.

I like the Louis Seacamp and Carl Benson-designed Mossberg 800 and 810 series rifles better, but these are fine, sort of an amalgamation between the Remington 700, Savage 110, and Howa 1500.

I love mine. I have one in .30-06 and wouldn't hesitate to buy one in .270 too. Only thing you'll hear is to let the barrel cool if you're going for super tight groups.

Now, as to whether its worth it or not, a 605 would be around $400 new, the Mossberg with no scope is about $300. Depending on how good of a scope it is, it could be worth it.

I have one in .270 and have no problems with it.The series hasn't been out that long which is one reason that there's not much resale market.People don't know the name that well yet,a lot of people think Mossberg only makes shotguns.
The first runs had some problems but they've been corrected in the later production.
Take a look at the link, ask the people who actually own and use them.

It's a hunting rifle in a good price range nothing more but surely nothing less. They work well for putting meat in the freezer and handle normal hunting use/abuse well. Are they as accurate as Savage...of course not...are they better than a Remington 710/770...Yup..

With the barrel nut, a Mossberg 100ATR is a rifle the end-user can rebarrel himself, too. Granted, without teeth on which to grab, the Mossberg nut isn't as easy to remove as a Savage, but it can be done with a strap wrench. As a result, the ATR has the same level of consistency as a Savage. As to barrel quality, the barrels are just fine. I haven't compared the accuracy between an ATR and, say a Remington 700 or Savage 110, but the Mossberg will be more than accurate for hunting. Just put good glass on it, don't go cheap with optics and an ATR will be a real performer.

I had two and gave them away. Not because they were junk. On the contrary i gave them to friends. They were both exceptional shooters. one 270 and one 06 and both would shoot moa with loads they like. Something ive struggle with using 600 dollar rugers! Disposable guns? Not likely. Where do opinions like that come from. I know for a fact i personaly put well over 300 rounds through the 06 and its had at least that many more shot out of it allready and has accounted for more dear then the average guy shoots in his lifetime. My buddys daughter that i gave it to gets 10 indian tags ever year for deer. two normal tags, and helps us shoot crop damage deer with it and she loves it. Now im a bit of a gun snob and do perfer a slightly higher end gun but anyone that tells you there not worth the 300 bucks they cost is smoking crack!
