Covid made them jump into the virtual auction. They are legit. I have sat at the auction and bid before. It was mostly my fault for not really learning what the new on line bidding was. My fault. No big deal. The numbers are in my post above.

Do I understand correctly that the auction house is offering you the “opportunity “ to buy at the high bid?

If so , it seems to me that there should be room to negotiate given the fact that your next highest bid was lower than the bogus bid.
In practical terms , the bogus high bid never happened.

No. What they are offering is a second chance like when someone is a dead beat buyer on eBay. I had bid a high of 3000 dollars plus 10 percent auction premium after I found that my 2500 offer was a bid not a buy. So that would be 3300 dollars on my last bid all in. The high bidder had bid 3350 and add in ten percent and its almost 3700, They offered it to me for 3400 including the auction premium

How much was the high bid because of the deadbeat?? In other words what would the price be with out the deadbeat..?? That is why you need to review the bidding.. See who bid.. and how much influence did the deadbeat have on the auction. Heck you may have been bidding much more because of this guy.. And I still do not like this auction house..

I think I got it now and this seems like a legit deal. Let us know what you decide to do.

As Indy1919a4 said, this deadbeat could have been causing the bids to go higher, it's even possible that he was working for the auction house? Something just doesn't pass the smell test to me.

I don’t understand why once the high bidder fell out it didn’t revert back to the last highest bid.

Still need to see how m as ny times deadbeat bid. If it was more than the final bid, he drove the bid higher than it otherwise may have gone. If they knew he was a deadbeat at the end, surely they knew during the bidding process. In the humble words of Charlie Chan, Sum ting wong.

I've got agree that this dead beat bidder may have run up the price beyond what it would have actually sold for. I think I'd decline and let them run the gun on auction again.

The gun is in great shape and you are unlikely to find another one as nice. However, the price is really steep. If you really want this pistol and can afford it, buy it. If it will put you in a financial bind then don't buy it and look for another that may be almost as nice.

Most of the online Luger dealers have markups of 20-26% on the Lugers they offer.

I like this 10 times to the 3rd power... An Auction house has only 2 commodities to sell Trust and Integrity. They have 2 masters the Consignor and the Bidder and they must be open and above board with both parties as a go between.. Sunlight and openness makes all happy

A second chance offer is always a bad idea. The other bidders are not aware of what is going on and it plays a game with the whole element of trust.. And that goes triple with e-bays second chance offers.

DSC03797.JPG DSC03798.JPG DSC03799.JPG DSC03800.JPG DSC03801.JPG The owner of the AH said he would have called them first but they were also not local and if he could finish the auction by going to me a local about 15 miles away that can cash and carry it would be better for him. So what they did is sell it to me for what the high bid was minus auction fees. So they make nothing on the sale but finalize the auction. I have the gun in hand and there was no tool in the rig but another surprise. A black bottom extra mag in the mag holder. They must have not seen it. I almost missed it but then spotted it as I was breaking the gun down to inspect. The gun is indeed all matching. The hold open bar, FP and other hidden parts are all matching. The wood grips are not numbered that I can find but have eagle 655 waffenampt on both.

$3000-4000 is not unheard of for premium condition Swiss or Krieghof Lugers. Artillery ones with all the kit are right up there too as are navies. The Carbines are really high !

Well , it was a messy transaction but you got your Luger.
I agree that the right thing to do would have been to re-run the auction , but that point is now quite moot.

Enjoy your acquisition.

This makes 4 lugers I have. I have bought and sold several over the years. My first which I still own is a G date. I bought it while on vacation in Vegas. Walked into a pawn shop and they had a G date in 95 percent condition and 39 date holster and two g date mags for 1300. I bought it on the spot. I have two 39s and one has matching mag. I am most likely going to sell on. Probably the non matching mag.

@castile

The only thing that matters is that you’re happy with the transaction and it sounds like you are.

congrats for adding another to your collection

Well sure I get that but to over pay for a gun and be happy is to live in ignorance. Its not that I like the gun but that the value is there. From all I can find it is. I found one rig like this non matching holster for 4700. The condition was not as good as the one I purchased. So I believe the value is there.
