I recently purchased a new RemArms 870 and posted about it here.

New RemArms 870 review | The High Road

I was initially looking for a Benelli M2. I wanted a short, 24" barreled 20 ga semi-auto and had positive experiences with Benelli 12's in the past. But it seems they are unavailable, at least for a few more months. I'd already left a deposit and took the 870 instead. No regrets, it is close enough and I'm liking the quality of the new Remingtons. Saving $800 didn't hurt either.

But as luck would have it I ran into a 24" barreled 20 ga Weatherby SA-08 used for $300. It is a Turkish made gun with Weatherby stamped on it. For $300 I'm taking a chance on it. I'm still $500 under budget for what I was initially looking for. But I don't know much about them.

Here is my question. The gun is gas operated, 5 3/4 lbs., and came with 2 pistons. According to the manual the "light load piston" is for 7/8 oz loads. Supposedly SOME 7/8 ounce loads will cycle with the "heavy load piston" in place but for anything heavier than 7/8 oz they recommend the "heavy load piston".

Mine needs the "light load piston" to cycle any 7/8 ounce load I have, and obviously the heavy 1 1/4 oz turkey loads need the "heavy load piston". It is the mid-level 1 oz loads that I'm not sure about. According to the manual I should be using the "heavy load piston". It does eject them, but barely. Empties fall at my feet. With the "light load piston" in place the empties eject 10' or so to the right.

I will almost always use 1 oz loads or turkey loads. I'm tempted to just use the piston for heavy loads and forget about light loads in this gun. I'd rarely use them anyway and have other guns that will shoot them. But I'm also concerned about reliability with such weak ejection. All of the rounds I shot did eject, but it was only about 8-10 shots. Maybe I'm overthinking this.

I've owned several other semi's, Rem 11-87, Beretta 390 and Benelli M1 that would compensate and shoot any 2 3/4" or 3" load with no adjustment needed. Surely someone else has used something similar and can provide some insight.

Don't they say to shoot a few boxes of heavy loads to kinda break in the auto guns, so maybe it will eject better after a few boxes. I'm not really a shotgun person but it's what I'd try.

It's a used gun. But I have no idea how much it was used before I got it. I'm going to the range tomorrow and will put more rounds through it. Plan to shoot a round or 2 of skeet or 5 stand.

I gave the gun a thorough cleaning last night and went the range this morning. Was going to shoot a round of clays, but it started raining just as I got there. I was able to put a few rounds downrange though. With the piston for heavy loads it is now ejecting much more forcefully with 1 oz loads than before.

I'm going to leave that piston on as a default. In the rare case when I shoot lighter loads will go to the other piston for them.

I think I've figured out what I needed to know. I've never used a gun with this system before.
