I just found a revolver that is identical to one my brother has. It is for sale for what I consider to be a low price, and I wanted to get knowledgeable oppinions from the group on it.

It is an H&R 949? I know there were several model numbers associated with this type.

The revolver is a .22, 9 shot, 5.5" barrel, double action, loads through a gate, and ejects with an ejector rod.

The two flaws on this revolver are 1. the ejector rod housing showes some light rust that has removed most of the blueing, and 2. I can't get the cylinder to rotate with the hammer at half cock.

I figure something must be wrong with the trigger group, egunparts.com lists all the internals for this series of pistols. I think I could trouble shoot this and fix it cheaply.

Does anyone have experience with this series of revolvers? Is is worth the time, effort, and $69.00 to buy it?

Thanks,

Buddy used to have one we shot a ton of ammo through. I'd consider them to be relatively cheap revolvers but pretty solid and well enough made for the price. His was completely functional, reliable and quite accurate. For the price you listed, I'd jump on it.

Double action western sixgun lookalike. Nice 22s. I would jump on it too. Great price! You will need to become familiar with the manual of arms.

They are nice little revolvers that you can sometimes find for a steal. They don't have the eye appeal of other models, but are really well made. New England firearms made a very similar model also.
The next step up would be to find the H&R 999 with the top break action. Unfortunately people knew they were very good revolvers and you probably won't find one at rock bottom prices.

Thanks for the replies. I really want to pick this one up to use as a pack and hiking gun. My single six is just too nice to subject to that role.

I'll have to see if I can make it work. Money (as allways) is a little snug.

I guess I'll drop by the store today and see if they'll talk price. It should help that the revolver has some unresolved issues that I'm willing to work on.

Unfourtunately, I waited to long to get back to the store. The revolver had found someone more decisive to go home with.

Oh, well. It saved me a difficult conversation with my wife on why I needed another .22 revolver after she just bought me an anniversary model single six last year.

While I was at the counter, a customer walked in with an H&R sportsman or 999. The shop only wanted to give him $85 for it. I asked to look at it and commented I had been looking for one like it for a while. ( would have gladly given him $150 on the spot!

He told me he was looking to buy it from a friend and was just trying to see what it was worth.

Darn!!!!

I guess I'll just have to get my .45 slide milled for night sights instead. I've got to find some way to spend this money I shouldn't be spending.

Thanks for the helpfull replys.
