i have an h&r 949.when you cock it the cylinder wont rotate.the hand works just just fine with the cyclinder out.tried a new hand and same problem.can anyone help?

Does the little tab that stops the cylinder (pointing upwards from the inside of the frame) work properly? Does it retract when you pull the trigger? It may not be retracting. Or, sometimes it's out of time with the hand. The hand may be trying to move the cylinder before that tab retracts.

949 still wont work

woad yurt,
thanks for the reply.the cylinder latch is ok.drops in and out when it should.when cocking the revolver, the hand comes out and just slightly turns the cylinder then slips off the wratchet.im not sure what to check to see why this happens.

sid,
I have a H&R M949. I'm not totally sure what you are trying to tell us? Are you trying to rotate the cylinder to load and reload? If that's what you are talking about what you need to do is cock the hammer to the FIRST STOP only. That will allow the cylinder to turn freely. Sorry if I got this all wrong and you are trying to describe a different problem.

Just as a side note, I just love the fact H&R designed this revolver to have the classic 4 clicks like the original Colt SAA.

archangelicd,
the only way you can turn the cylinder is buy hand.if you try to cock the revolver by pulling the trigger or the hammer the cylinder will not turn.it is not locked up.the hand is not working right and does not rotate the cylinder.hope this helps.

Hi guys - I'm new here, and found this thread describing the same problem I'm having with my HR 949. I've replaced the cylinder, mainspring and the cylinder stop and I still have trouble with the cylinder not always turning in single action mode—or at least not moving all the way to the next firing position. I'm now suspecting inadequate spring pressure on the hand, but have no way to measure it. With the cylinder out, I can hold a fingertip over the hand's slot, and feel no pressure when the hammer is cocked. Does that indicate a bad spring? I'm, not a gunsmith, so please don't assume I know anything about gun repair. Over the years, a couple of local gunsmiths have taken a stab at it, but neither solved the problem.
