I was just recently bitten by the optics bug. I want to put an Eotech on my AK with the Ultimak mount and forward scope mount my Garand and M1A with the Leupold FX-II 4X28 scopes.
Everyone understands the primitive sights on the AK, but most get by, I don't really have a problem with them on a rest. I end up having to work to align the sight picture when offhand, but once there am ok. I believe a red dot sight would negate the AK's sight handicap and be a worthy addition to this carbine. I'd like to hear some comments from those that have red-dots on their AK's and how they've liked or disliked them and what configurations seem to work best.
Regarding the Garand and M1A, I sold my first Garand because I couldn't put a scope on it and I "needed" a deer rifle. For the longest time scope mounts for it were a complicated and hit or miss proposition I didn't want to chance, but now with the forward scope mount picatinny rails available for them it appears that the problem has been mostly solved. I used to want the traditional scopes mounted on both rifles, but have always been curious about the scout scopes. In theory they seem to be the cure for a combat or quick acquisition optic.
I have always felt that the potential of their calibers .30-06 and .308 could never be fully reached with open sights and some magnification could allow more use of the reach of these calibers.
I currently have a Nikon 6X42 mounted on my Remington 700 in .30-06 set up in the traditional method and for my intentions for it, it will serve it's purpose.
I'd like to hear opinions from those that have the forward scope setups on their Garands and M1As and how you like or dislike them and if there are other preferences. I believe the 4X power forward mount would be a good compromise, to have the peripheral vision/awareness with both eyes open and the ability to get more use from the magnification for the .30-06 and .308 cartridges.
