I was just recently bitten by the optics bug. I want to put an Eotech on my AK with the Ultimak mount and forward scope mount my Garand and M1A with the Leupold FX-II 4X28 scopes.

Everyone understands the primitive sights on the AK, but most get by, I don't really have a problem with them on a rest. I end up having to work to align the sight picture when offhand, but once there am ok. I believe a red dot sight would negate the AK's sight handicap and be a worthy addition to this carbine. I'd like to hear some comments from those that have red-dots on their AK's and how they've liked or disliked them and what configurations seem to work best.

Regarding the Garand and M1A, I sold my first Garand because I couldn't put a scope on it and I "needed" a deer rifle. For the longest time scope mounts for it were a complicated and hit or miss proposition I didn't want to chance, but now with the forward scope mount picatinny rails available for them it appears that the problem has been mostly solved. I used to want the traditional scopes mounted on both rifles, but have always been curious about the scout scopes. In theory they seem to be the cure for a combat or quick acquisition optic.
I have always felt that the potential of their calibers .30-06 and .308 could never be fully reached with open sights and some magnification could allow more use of the reach of these calibers.

I currently have a Nikon 6X42 mounted on my Remington 700 in .30-06 set up in the traditional method and for my intentions for it, it will serve it's purpose.
I'd like to hear opinions from those that have the forward scope setups on their Garands and M1As and how you like or dislike them and if there are other preferences. I believe the 4X power forward mount would be a good compromise, to have the peripheral vision/awareness with both eyes open and the ability to get more use from the magnification for the .30-06 and .308 cartridges.

Consider the Burris 2-7x32 Handgun Scope with Ballistic Plex reticle.
Use low rings and the M8 hand guard from Ultimak

I have the same scope on my MK14 SEI Mod 0

Yep, I have that exact same scope on my M1. Have you checked the archives? There are a number of other thread on exactly this topic...

Okay, I've discovered that setting up these rifles for optics will be a relatively expensive endeavor just for the mounts, not counting the scopes.
I think I'm going to go with the Eotech 516 with the buttons on the side and which used the CR123 batteries for the AK.
But for the M1A and Garand I had thought that the fixed 4X would the right choice, but have been reading alot about the 2X or 2.75X Burris scopes that seem to be the prevailing scout scope for these rifles. For those that have used the 4X scopes how has your experience been with them? Is it too much power? For those with the 2X or 2.75X power scopes, are they enough or just right?

Don't forget about eye relief. You're fairly limited in where you can mount a forward scope on an M1 or (to a lesser extent) M1A, and not all pistol or scout scopes will work well. I would suggest finding a big sporting goods store like Cabelas and test-fitting all the scopes you can find - you may discover that only one or two will fit and that'll make you decision for you. I really don't think any of them are a bad choice.

The Ultimak is the lowest forward rail for the M1a. I'm a fan of Eotech/Aimpoint, but a low power optical sight should be fine. Personally, I'd go with a Burris 1x over any magnification, but it depends on what you want to use your rifle for. I don't like optics with restricted eye relief for service rifles.

I have a Russian Kobra optic (collimator sight with selectable reticles) on my SAR-1, and love it. It makes the rifle much more shootable and shrunk my group size in half or better. It's a cheaper approach than an Ultimak + Eotech; price was $185 out the door from Tantal, probably a bit more now, but it mounts on the existing optics rail so no separate mount is necessary. The sight is not quite as nice as an Eotech, but does offer a 1.8MOA dot and selectable reticles, and holds zero when removed and replaced.

The reticle is actually red; it only looks white in the photos because I had it turned up too high and it saturated the CCD of the camera I was using.

The Ultimak set up on my AK works great! With this set up it also allows me to mount and use night vision without disturbing the holosight.
