Optics for M4 Type AR-15

What type optics are suggested for a flat-top M4 clone? A red dot , 30mm?

What about acceptable performance from an economical choice (less than $150)??

I'm new at this and trying to get an idea as I spec out my AR-15. (hopefully a Sept./Oct purchase).

I liked the EOTech holosight when I had it on my M4 clone but they are kind of pricey and eat batteries like crazy.

The thing projects a 65MOA circle with a 1 MOA dot in the center. So you can use it for up close just by putting the circle on the target or longer ranged fire by focusing on the dot. Really quick to aim at short range with the circle.

In that price range, I'd suggest the Russian Kobra collimator sight. It has 4 different reticles and negligible parallax. I used one for quite a while but eventually replaced it with an Aimpoint.

I really appreciated the multiple reticles on the Kobra but don't like the exposed reflector screen. If I had a few extra bucks, I'd keep one around as a spare sight. An ATN may be a reasonable alternative, they're Russian too.

Depends on what the main purpose of the weapon is. If it's gonna be a range/fun gun then a mid priced cross haired scope would be fine. The .223 has negligable recoil so you don't need to spend a boat load of cash for a rugged scope. If you envision this as being a defensive weapon and considering the effective range of the .223 round, meaning jacket fragmentation, is about 150 - 175 yds. I'd suggest a red dot scope. I like the Aimpoint myself, many prefer the EoTech. The US Army chose the Aimpoint so I can guarantee it was put thru hell and the newer ones do have a ridiculously long battery life as opposed to the EoTech. There are other red dots out there for less $$. Then there's the Trijicons if your wallet gets really bulged at some time in the future.
