I've got a couple of new .223 Mini's and I'd like to put on a scope or red-dot. I've got "over fifty" eyes, will limit shots to sub 150m, want the optic to be as small as practical, and really want to limit cost to under $400. Application is for self-defense and general utility,

My list of likely models include - Burris Fullfield and Timberline 2x7's, Leupold FX 2.5x and 4x, VXII 1-4x and 2-7x, Mark AR 1.5-4x, Weaver V3 1-3x, and the Aimpoint 9000sc.

Any comments on these optics or recommendations for others of this type will be welcome.

I've had no problems with the Ruger mounting system, including some big bores. Personally mine now has a 3-9 Nikon on it, just because I had one laying around. I think something in the 2-7 range would be just fine.

I have FFII's, Bushnell 3200's,Leupold, Nikon, Weaver Grand Slam and Classic Extreme scopes and all have worked well. Personally even at 150 yards I like a little more than the 3 power you mentioned, I use a Weaver Grand Slam 4.75 x 40 on a Ruger .308 Carbine and it just allows me to shoot accurately out to 150-175 yards.

I've never had a problem with the Ruger mounting system. It always locked up securely on my Mini 14 and Mini 30. I DID have a problem with a Bushnell Sportview 3x9x32 scope on the Mini 30. Recoil shook it apart. Any of your choices listed will be good.
