I just got my Uberti 1860 Army back and I’m pleased to report that it’s a shooter! Jackrabbit57 optimized the gun and I have no complaints. The loose arbor was retightened and is solid, the loading lever was repaired, and there are a number of new improvements as well (action block, set screw to prevent hammer overtravel, bolt guide, and I’m sure some other improvements). The overall function of the gun is much improved as well. I forgot both Crisco and factory caps for the long trip to where I shoot, so I needed to make do with homemade caps and no lubricant. Despite these limitations, the gun functioned smoothly with no hang ups. And even though I didn’t dare to shoot the homemade caps more than one at a time to prevent chainfires (it’s happened with these caps before), the gun just worked for hours with no hangups which made the chore of loading one shot at a time much less tedious. This gun is becoming my new favorite and I highly recommend Jackrabbit57’s work. I wanted to post this to thank him for resurrecting the Army. My next post will be some ballistics observations about the .44.
