Calif. laws (hahahahahaha) state that you are a criminal if someone gains access to your gun by illegal means and then uses it for a crime.

There are some fancy-dancy extras like which guns are a crime if taken to a SCHOOL and such, but in general if a GUN is NOT locked up and a bad guy STEALS it and shoots it, YOU are also a criminal.

Thus my question. Since the ONLY .....legal..... place to store a gun in CA is either.....locked.....(CA "approved" lock only).....or IN A SAFE, then common sense dictates that there are several times when you may need a weapon faster than you could .....legally.....get to it.

So.......what kind of deadly weapon would you choose? I sorta lean toward pepper spray combo with machete, but even a BIG knife is too close for me.

Gay Pit Bull with AIDs.

Actually a Nice Louiville Slugger is a good bet also , and if you realy want to look totally cool and collected a Big ole Cop Maglight is nice to have also .

A mace. :neener:

Another gun!

And I'm not being flip here -- they don't say "Sure as shootin'" for nothing. When the state deprives you of the means of effective self-defense -- and of a basic civil right in the process -- the state assumes an absolute liability for your protection.

And if enough of us get up on our hind legs and say that, it will be true.

A homemade flamethrower? There are no federal laws regulating them, but Kommiefornistan might. Just make sure the bad guy is outside before you start the BBQ. :D

I don't think that happens to be true.

Are you still allowed to cary concealed on your own property in Cali?

If so, carry a CCW while home, put it on your night table when you sleep and lock it up securely before you leave your home.

That's what I do here in NC. Even though I have a CCL, there are places I need to go to that require me to leave my defensive weapon at home. And while NC laws are not so draconian as yours, we do have a law on the books that can make the gunowner legally responsible in a minor gains access to your weapon and uses it in a crime.

I keep my car keys in my gun safe so I can't forget to secure it.

Big dog. No doubt about it. Actually, if I had to put them in order re: effective home defense, I'd go with dog first, then gun.

The dog will go a long way toward making sure that you don't get hit in the first place. Of course, this means only the real nasty scumbags will invade or B&E you with a big dog on the property...so it's good to have a lead-injection device handy too.

PS: This was post # 1776 for me :) Nice number that...

Good locks, strong doors, thorns under windows.

Alarm system with siren.

Get a safe.

Worst case - call the cops, barricade yourself in your prepared room. If you planned right, all the guns, except the loaded one in your hands, are behind you, or in the room with you.

Failing that, the field evens out. Just remember that any weapon you're not sufficiently skilled with can be removed and used against you in many circumstances.

I'd definitely go with a good dog for non-firearm home defense.

think about it... you're not trying to make yourself a hard target, just a less soft one.

Also consider getting an electronic alarm.

These are still no replacement for a good gun, but every little thing you can do to make your home less inviting for goblins the better.

"I don't think that happens to be true."

Your instinct is good, Ewok. If there are no kids around, you can store a firearm any way you want in California. Even still, if a kid gets hold of a gun by way of an illegal entry by any person, you are off the hook as the gun owner.

Like the man said "Another gun".

There is a couple of options for having a gun at the ready. You can have it on your person while on your own property. Another option is a quick access safe, the type that uses finger print ID instead of a key to open the safe. They're actuall pretty fast to access.

Me, i ain't gonna worry about it. I keep on close at hand while i'm at home, then before i leave to go to work i lock it up in my safe.

If you have little ones around there's another option. A while back i bought an FEG Highpower 9mm. At first i was going to remove the mag safety because i thought the things were worthless. My bedside gun is a .357 that i had an action job done on so it has a fairly light and smooth action. I got to wondering one day if my 8 yr old grandaughter could shoot it. She's had safety training but sometimes kids will be kids. So i had her try it. She could. I took the Highpower, handed her the gun and the mag and told her to make it go "click". She couldn't figure that one out. So now when the little ones are around i use the FEG for my bed side gun. I load one in the chamber and drop the mag. With a little bit of practice it's pretty fast to get into action.

I'd day my x-wife ... but.. that would be too cruel for even the worst criminal.

A super soaker filled with beef broth, a badger and a pointy stick.

Spray the burglar with beef broth, poke the badger a couple of times with the pointy stick, toss the badger at the burglar & let the games begin! :D

I only think the law regarding handgun locks is with kids. Any gun that could get in the hands of a child must be locked. It doesnt have to do with if its stolen or not.

A 300 lb man with a (practically) life sized tatoo of a crucifix on his back from shoulder blade to shoulder blade, and 9 of his buddies.

I kid you not, true story, we used to live in a pretty rough neighborhood in Dallas (Pleasant Grove) and across the street from us there lived a houseful (a tiny little cottage actually) of Mexican guys, about ten of them. No idea if they were legal immigrants or not, but they didn't speak English- the largest and most intimidating looking of them as described above.

Now I have no idea if the man I described was at all in favor of defending himself or his home, for all I know he might have been a died-in-the-wool pacifist, they were good neighbors (other than getting a little loud and shooting their pistole's in the air on Saturday nights), but they didn't have air conditioning, and slept with their windows open in the summertime (which runs from April - October in Dallas) and my wife commented once that it wasn't safe for them to sleep with the windows open in our neighborhood.

I asked her if she was a bad guy, would she want to crawl through the window of that particular house? She saw my point.

Second choice would be the big mean dog. I actually have a couple of big mean (sounding) dogs that I count on to summons me if the house needs defending. Unfortunately I havent yet learned to distinguish between their "somebodies here" bark, and their "look at this cool turtle" (snake, frog, rat, skunk etc) barks:D The UPS guy won't get out of his truck in my driveway so I guess they must be doing something right.

I'd go with a dog, big or not (hey, those little ones have alot of heart in em when it comes to their masters).

Or ferrets, no joke.

I housesitted for a friend of mine while I was in the military and they had two ferrets. Those little rat like bastards (actually, one was female) would take turns wrapping around your ankles while the other would try to remove your toes.

Great animals. I wish to get a couple but my cat would look at them like food :(.

Here is my "defense" system:

1 dog, terrier. If a crook got in, would pee on the floor and run like heck :(.

Dead Bolt. But bad door frame. A couple of good kicks, down she goes. Dog should have been barking by that time.

Outside "sentry light". One of those with the motion sensor that comes on when someone walks up. So I can see what I may have to aim at.

Saferoom, unlocked at night. If I can get to that, Mossy 500A fully loaded. SKS with two 30rd mags ready to insert, a couple of loaded guns in the safes.

Kimber .45 at hand at all times.

Magsnubby:
Be careful with that strategy. From the post it seems that you keep a chamber loaded Hi Power with loaded mag nearby and rely only on the mag safety and hope the kid doesn't insert mag and pull trigger. Kids can figure anything out. Maybe your situation is safer than I pictured, but it sounds spooky.

As far as gun lock laws, I thought the perfect answer was a broken gun lock lying beside the gun. Just dust it off every now and then. Using a gunsafe when I am away is not that difficult though.

Get a Gunvault .

I can open the one next to my bed in seconds; it holds my carry gun (when not on) and my bedside gun very handily. Either my wife or I can get into it, but kids & crooks can't (well, I don't know about a sustained attack with a crowbar by a criminal--but your liability has to end somewhere, doesn't it?).
