Nope. I only used the Hipower when the grand kids were over (i've since switched back to the .357,unloaded gun, speed loader). Then it was only for my bedside gun. The gun was on the head board and the mag was under my pillow. Anytime there's any kids around the guns are all in the safe.

Anyway, the kids are older now so i guess i need to buy something like a gunvault.

I only think the law regarding handgun locks is with kids. Any gun that could get in the hands of a child must be locked. It doesnt have to do with if its stolen or not.

Wouldn't this be all guns? A gun could be stolend and end up in a kid's hand. Like that first grader who took his mother's drugee boyfriend's stolen gun to school and shot one of his classmates.

I can't see any reason to be held responable for the actions of other people.

CA law requires a gun to be kept inaccessible to children.

A locked house is inaccessible to children, for the purposes of meeting the letter of the law. If your house is broken into, you will not be charged if your loaded gun is taken from your nightstand under CA safe storage laws.

Our security system had a false alarm one day. The cops were called, and my wife drove home (she was closer than me) and she got there first. She waited for the cop to show up, they did a perimeter check, then she unlocked the door for him. He went in with his pistol drawn.

After he cleared the house, he commented to my wife "Nice Sig". He had found my 229 on the nightstand. If he had a problem with unsafe storage he would have said something. He had already determined that we had no kids or anyone else who might be in the home.

I had to go buy a new gunsafe (my old one was not CA DoJ approved) in order to be able to buy new guns EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NO CHILDREN!!!! That borders right up there for stupidity with the 10 day waiting period. I mean, after I already own one gun, why would a "cooling off" help? If I am going to commit a crime of passion I already have enough guns to do someone in, right?

(The laws are for the children- If it saves one life it's worth it- guns are only for killing people)

Remember the old joke: What's brown and black and looks good on a burglar. A doberman.

My Dad once new a guy who raised Cheetahs, I'd imagine they were good too.

A rifle, or pistol.

now excuse me while I walk around the house chanting "this is my rifle, this is my gun, this is for shooting, this is for fun..."

Other than a hammer.. what's best for driving nails?

Other than a screwdriver.....

you get the point - use the appropriate tool. In your home the most appropriate tool is a firearm you can competently use. Keep it secured when not in your immediate control.

That Kali law isn't designed to "protect the children". It's designed to discourage citizens who don't already own guns from purchasing them by increasing the legal burden of ownership to the point where most people look for alternative means of self protection. Unfortunately, alternative means are also less effective unless your rich enough to hire out your personal protection duties.

Please reconsider your options.

Motion Detector lights in the front yard, back yard, and along the sides of the house.

Also, a good, big, powerful flashlight to keep handy inside the house. Actually, get several good, big powerful flashlights and spread them around the house.

A reaction plan that you rehearse with your spouse, children, and anyone else living in the house with you.

Who is going where, what they will do, where to meet up outside the house should you need to get out, who will call the police, etc.

One of these. They are made in Phoenix and many departments now use them. They have some incredable videos on the website. They can even be carried without a CCW in most states.

I second the GunVault suggestion. Opening it takes about one second longer than grabbing a stick. And as suggested above, you can ccw in your home too.

I'd expect almost any dog to slow down an attacker. Staffordshire Bull Terrier would be my choice of a significant deterrent. The police might have to pry him off with the jaws of life...

Knife. It's simpler and easier to use indoors than a machete, while not being too small. Add a Surefire to that equation, and you've got a good chance.

My dogs are my first line defense, ahead of the guns. If they get past three Dobermans, they'll have to deal with Mama...and everybody knows you don't mess with Mama!!! :D
