I have a new Tikka t3 Deluxe in 270 Win. I gave it a good cleaning before I fired it and cleaned it again after 7 rounds of Federal Power Shock 130gr. Both times I used a patch worm and Bore-Tek Eliminator. Since then I put 16 rounds of hand loaded Hornady SST 150gr through it. Well I since purchased an Otis cleaning kit and was wondering if it could be used to remove any copper fouling. I know, the brass brushes can be eaten by ammonia and was wondering if the brass patch holders would be damaged like the brushes when using ammonia based cleaners and patches? I also have a Pro Shot stainless steel rod and a universal Gun-Slick bore guide. Being a new barrel, I figured it might be a good idea to try and remove copper but don't want to use the Otis Kit if it will mess up the brass patch holders/threads and have one come off inside my bore. I plan to order some nylon brushes. Thanks for all advice! :)

Maybe I'd better go back to the Patch Worm cause I must be the only one who has an Otis cleaning kit!

I don't shoot very much copper but when I do - I use solvent to dissolve the copper and brush and wipe it out. If you'are going to use a strong copper solvent buy a stainless brush and rod and dedicate them to copper removal work only. The trick is to soak the bore and keep running patches through until they come out squeaky clean. The brush doesn't do much of the work, the solvent does. Then oil and pull some patches through. Sweet's 7.62 solvent is the best one I have used. It's quite strong, don't leave it in a bore more than an hour or so.

buy a stainless brush
Emmmm?

I'd buy a nylon brush.

Stainless wire brushes are reserved by me for scraping 100 year old corrosive primer rust out of already damaged bores.

They do less damage then the rust.
But not much less.

Use a nylon brush with copper solvent.

Or just wash the copper jags, bronze brushes, and flex shaft rod in clean hot water when you get done using them with aggressive copper solvent.

I keep a screw-top quart can of alcohol paint thinner on the bench for swishing used brushes in after I use copper solvent.
