1. Someone jiggles the knob & then knocks on my front door.

2. I go draw my pistol from its holster & answer the door with gun behind my back.

3. Some stranger asks for a neighbor of ours (the neighbor is black, no confusing him & I).

4. I tell stranger where to find who he is looking for & start to close the door.

5. As I am closing the door the stranger throws his weight against it & attempts to force his way inside.

6. I am unable to physically prevent the intruders entry into our home.

7. Intruder turns to close door behind him, (I can only assume to prevent us from escaping) I step back out of intruders arm reach & take up a two handed combat stance activating the laser sight & disable the safety with my thumb.

8. Intruder turns back around to see .45 pointed at him with red dot in center of his chest.

9. Intruders entry is halted, his hostile actions cease.

10. My wife frantically calls 911 while clutching our two year old child in terror.

11. I order the intruder to leave our home.

12. Intruder slowly re-opens our front door & then runs outside.

13. Police arrive & take report.

With some of the other "home invasion threads" I thought sharing what happened to us last week might help keep a few fellow THR members & their families from harm.

This sort of activity appears to be becoming more & more common, and had I not heard the door handle jiggling before the knock I might not had been prepared to control the situation in a favorable way.

That crack-head was just extremely lucky that I did not want my daughters first memory to be that of her father killing an intruder right in front of her.

Be aware, be safe,

-Richard.

:what:

I've been on the wrong side of a home invasion too. Mine turned out much worse. Nice work.

What part of the country are you in? How long did the police take to arrive?

Be careful, your neighbor might have been involved in planning this?

It's good that you didn't shoot, although I wouldn't have let him leave. Then again I don't have a wife and daughter to think about.

Excellent job. It's stories like this that fuel every fight I have with those who would disarm us.

I would want him as far away from me as possible. After his little "reception" I suspect he will find easier prey elsewhere. Good job, good instincts.

Congratulations on excellent situational awareness and 'tactical' response. What part of the country are you in? Urban or rural? Upscale/middleclass/low-income neighborhood?

Probably couldn't have gone better for you. Hope the police are able to skim that scum off the pond soon.

Hard to believe that you had the restraint to not shoot. So, he had time to turn around and close the door? I take it the intruder(s) wasn't/weren't armed? Good that nobody in your family got hurt. Bad that the intruders didn't have to face more severe consequences.

A similar incident happened to me. I was walking to my friend's and a guy followed me at a distance. I noticed him so I locked the door when I got in. He tried the door knob but couldn't get in. I confronted him through the door, he was "looking for his friend" (who's name he didn't know) that he thought lived there. I told him to leave (with gun in hand hidden behind my leg) and he did.

We live in Anderson Indiana, its a lower income, racially diverse, working class neighborhood.

The police response was fairly quick, about 3 minutes or so.

As far as the neighbor being involved, I have no evidence of it, but I will be watching him much more closely in the future.

And thanks for all of the positive responses, I have tried not to "monday morning" the incident placing it squarely in the "no-one was injured, no-one was killed" catagory and that is 100% acceptable on this end.

Thanks for the post puppy, like others have said - these situations actually happen and tools are required to deal with them, good man.

Good post. Glad that you and your family are OK. Nice work. You made the right decision not to shoot him. If he had advanced any further after you drew on him then I am sure it would have been a different story.

Three minutes is good. I called the police here in Chesapeake VA after a youth I had words with threatened to have his father come back with a 22 rifle and had to call them twice!!! Of course I didn't use 911 just the regular number. When the officer got there he said "No one came and actually brought a gun did they"?? It was very hard not to be a smart a$$ to him.

By the way, 2 teenagers from Anderson Indiana Killed 3 or 4 people in 3 separate incidents here in Decatur Illinois back in 94! One was a clerk at a convenience store on the first night, the nest night they killed 2 teenagers and left them by the river, I can't remember the 3rd incident(if there was one, I lived in Cali at the time, but knew one of the 2 teenagers).

yes most importantly no one was hurt... but allowing him to leave is not something i would have done... i would have kept everyone away from him (including myself at least 20 feet )and held him at gun point until the police arrived... i would inform him that any sudden movement WILL cost him his life... i would not allow him to leave as my neighbors and such have wives and children to look after as well... and i would feel its my duty to bring this scumbag to justice or take his life whichever comes first... what if he talks to his friend which is your african neighbor and finds out when you go to work and returns when your wife is home alone and does unspeakable things to both your wife and daughter?? for these reasons i wouldnt have allowed him to walk out the door... hes either going to the grave or going to prison if he enters my home in such a manner.

stay safe.

This will sound a lil crazy, but I put a couple of bells towards the top
of the front door and rear door in such a way that if there is a pushing
action on each the bells will ring. Now I don't know if this has kept our
place from getting hit as we live in a really quiet area, but I know more
than once when FedEx knocked the bells rang pretty loud. So far it's
worked for me...

Anyway sorry getting off topic, sure glad you and your's are safe...
That almost 1/2" dia opening at the muzzle end looks HUGE when
one is on the receiving end on it close up..

THe fact that he closed the door, after he forced his way inside makes me think that if you DID NOT HAVE A GUN ready, you and your family would have been either a) dead b) in very bad shape.

Good job!

Good ending to an otherwise bad situation. Could have been better (dead BG), but in today's society that may have been more trouble than it's worth. If the wife didn't understand why you carried before, I bet she does now. Might want to talk to her about getting her IN LTC if she doesn't have it already. Bring it up as a way for her to protect your daughter.

Congrats!! it sounds like you handled the situation very well. From reading about your expiercne it sounds to me like you were carrying even in your own house! I have several guns stashed around the house, but I don't normally carry 24/7. I might have to rethink how much I carry while I am at home.

Thanks for good story and Welcome to THR.

so what did the cops have to say?

Good job, I probably wouldve held him at gunpoint, make sure his hands are on his head.. but then again, thats not my job.. but I'd feel better getting him off the street.
