White Female, will turn 78 next month.
Periphial Neuropathy in both feet, arthritis, pseudo -gout in one knee, asthma, and other aches and pains.

She uses a Handicapped Hang Tag.

Latest surgery, cataract removed, still this female has undergone more than one surgery this year along with other invasive tests. About a week had a growth removed from leg in doctor's office , and benign.

After church, she went to get some items at Franchise Drug Store, and to treat herself to a Fast Food Fish sandwich.

She caught the store at a lull, as the Preacher went over time.
Parked, hobbled out and into store.
She makes purchases, one small bag, and looks out, before stepping out.
She has a clear path to her car...and hobbles out.
She was not even in the car "good", when a fellow appeared from nowhere, with a gas can and "Out of gas...".

She started her car, hit Reverse, which automatically locks doors and backed up, put in drive, and the one oncoming car got over, as this lady was going to leave that parking/drive lane set up.

" I may be old, but there was no car I could see needing gas, and it felt wrong!" she shared.

"I gotta a right to be out, and I hate the traffic pattern so I cut through the lots, using a shortcut to the Fast Food Place".

Which she did, then as she approached, her awareness "kicked up a notch" she really looked at that drive thru line.
She parked her car, hung that tag, marched in, placed her order and left.

It was faster than drive-thru, as no body was inside, in line.
In leaving and with traffic pattern, she goes right by where the Drug Store is, and the same fellow is making his way , to other cars asking for gas money.
She is at the light, watching, it depends on where he is on the lot, as to where he points he "ran out of gas".

"He just has a gas can as a ploy" - says this lady.
Listening to her, I have to agree my gut says the same thing hers does.

This all scared her, the area has changed, and not for better. This upsets her, simply because she cannot do what she once could, it is hard to walk, breath and just do normal activities she used to do.

Strategy & Tactics, change when one gets older, or down or both.
Still one has a right to be out and about in order to do simple activities.

I am not going to fault her, for not using her cane, it is an option for her to use, and just a short distance to store fronts, and the "hassle of keeping up and dealing with one" ...

She trusted her gut and left, being scared she left, don't matter, she left.
She accessed the Fast Food place, made a decision and kept focused after being committed when exiting her car.

No. She does not have a CCW, and she will admit, she is not of the proper mindset to have one.
Younger days, she was, now-a-days no.
Her workplace is a NO CCW area by statute.

I've know this lady for 52 years, I am her eldest son.

Yep, mom done good.

As for getting mom a new address... well, could be she don't want one just yet. After all, it does sound like she's still doing pretty well on her own, doesn't it?

( Yes, I'd ask her about it anyway, but I'd fully expect to hear a "no", if not a "Hell no!" )

Mom did real well....

You might ask is she wants a new address, but the answer will probably be along the line of "Not Now, Not Ever."

My mom was 76 when she passed, still living by herself at home, and had lost both legs due to diabetes complications.

In LA this is just a ploy to get money during the holidays not as a set up to be robbed.

Still they are a pita and its better to be safe than sorry

I'm a big, stout, healthy middle-aged man. I carry a CCW everywhere I go. I make similar decisions. It ain't just about older folks. It's about awareness.

We should all do as well as her.

You never know when someone who's willing to swindle people out of money will decide that an older and seemingly easy looking target might make them decide to try a robbery instead.

Also, if your Mom (who raised you right, it sure seems) isn't willing to CCW, tell her the cane idea would be a good one. A nice sturdy model could put some hurting on someone attempting to get too close.

Thanks for the story Steve. They just get better all the time. Did you see the tribute to Dad in the General Discussion section. Almost sounded like one of yours.
