I'm thinking of taking a car trip from Florida to Virginia (driving along Interstate 95 through Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina). I may be interested in taking my CCW pistol and I have a Florida Resident CCW license.

How can someone LEGALLY take a pistol on this trip since apparently South Carolina does not accept the Florida CCW license?

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

S.C. Code SECTION 16-23-20.

{the shortened version} (9) A loaded handgun can be carried in the glove box or in the console, (16)or a closed saddlebag on a motorcycle.

Put it in the glove box right before you cross the line, and take it out again when you leave.

Also, don't stop driving. Don't stop anywhere in S. Carolina including a place called South of the Border. I hear there's a bandito named Pedro who hangs out there.

One thing I plan to do when travelling is carry 10-round magazines. There are a few states that have ten-round limits and the last thing I need is to get arrested for possession of a "high capacity feeding device."

Does the glove box have to be LOCKED, or just closed, in SC?

Thanks.

no need to worry about 10 round mags, none of the states your going to have that limitation.

Also, packing.org is out of date on a lot of the maps.

Check handgunlaw.us for more up to date maps.

The text of the code just says "closed", no mention of "locked".
a person in a vehicle if the handgun is secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle; however, this item is not violated if the glove compartment, console, or trunk is opened in the presence of a law enforcement officer for the sole purpose of retrieving a driver's license, registration, or proof of insurance;

The only states you have to worry about 10 round mags are: CA, MA, MD, NJ (for more then 15 rounds), HI and Chicago.

To drive from FL to VA you don't have any trouble and as said, just put it in SC in the glove box and don't stop!

I live in MD and I'm not so sure about the 10 rd magazine ban. I've heard we have one, but it isn't enforced to my knowledge. I just bought a Sig 226 and it came with 2 12 rd mags and I bought 4 more 12 rd mags at the same place. I had a 15 rd mag for my double stack .45 before I sold it.

It's a moot point anyway as he won't be travelling in MD and they don't recognize anybody's CCW. Hell, they barely recognize their own CCW, that is, if you have the connections to the State House to get one.:banghead:

Having done that trip a number of times, let me recommend a stop at the restaurant next to the Days Inn at the Dillon /South of the Border exit. Really good food. (And the room was only $40.00 for the night.)

Good info to have as I'll be driving to Hawaii this fall for vacation.
