I shot the November/December THR match (check the competition forum for it) today. Two of the rifles I used were old vets. One was an M1 Garand and the other a 1917 Enfield. Both are .30-06 so reloads I made years ago for match shooting with the M1 worked fine with both.

The 1917 and I bring out the erratic in each other but I got some decent hits anyway.

I was impressed again with how good a rifle the M1 is. Mine was bought at a sporting goods section of a Woolworth's back in the 1980s. It was made in 1943 and came back to the states from So. Korea after many years there. The metal may have been refinished but the wood looks like it went through three wars. It probably did go through two, WWII and Korea.

The Garand's peep sights drew scorn from Gen. Patton, but he was wrong. They are excellent sights, easy for even my old eyes to work with. The rifle is heavy, but well-balanced. It still shoots well too. I don't think it's lost any accuracy since I shot it in HP matches just after I bought it. It was easy to reload for too. It took about four tries to find an accurate load, and the ones I rejected weren't that bad.

My son, 13, has started to shoot the M1. He likes it a lot.
It makes me smile to see him shooting a rifle used by soldiers from my father's generation.
