Over my head and loving it! My first IDPA match was this weekend!

We went to N.C. this weekend to see my sister and her husband. Last week I had seen a gun shop on the net near her house I wanted to visit. In the process of looking for directions I found some other gun shops in the area of interest to me. One of the ranges had an IDPA match planned for Saturday night. I had been told it would be a good idea to watch a match before joining one. Therefore, I called to get directions and to ask if the match was in a place where I could see all the action safely. The gentleman that I talked to told me that he was tired of people asking to watch. Before I could say anything, however, he completed his thought with “why watch if you can shootâ€. He told me that the worst thing that could happen would be that I would walk away with some experience under my belt. He asked what I shot and if I had a holster and spare magazines. He also asked if I had a spare magazine holster. I told him I did not. He asked, “Do you have pockets?†Of course I do; so there went my only excuse to back out. He encouraged me that it was only a game and that if I would forget about the clock that I would be able to just shoot and have a good time. Sign up was from 4 to 5 with a safety briefing at 5 followed by the match.
When the match began I was so nervous that I removed my pistol to load it at an improper time. One of the range instructors saw me and quickly ushered me out of the range area. After a proper tongue-lashing he began to thoroughly explain to me what I could and could not do. I was not in the least offended by this unsolicited attention; I was clearly nervous and the personal attention really helped to ease my tension. I was not the only new guy there and the whole staff took equal care that we all had a good time and were comfortable with what was expected of us. I had no idea how long a match would take (4-5 hours) so I was unable to finish the whole match. I had to get home and relive my baby sitter. It’s not like I was in the running for the win. I’ve only been shooting targets since January 04.
Despite my nervousness and getting fussed at I had a really good time. Now that I know what to expect I think that I’ll have even more fun and better results next time. My time should be shorter next time if only because I WILL have a magazine holster next time rather than digging around in my pants pocket for my spare magazine.

I would really like to hear about other people’s first match experiences.

I was at the same match and, in fact, was standing beside you when you removed your pistol. :) It's good you weren't offended; that gentleman can be a bit brusque at times and I was a bit worried when he took you outside.

I'm glad you had a good time and I hope to see you there again. There are several other matches in the area, some smaller and some larger than that one. Let me know if you want any info on them.

I went and watched at my first match. By the time it was over my trigger finger was itching really bad. LOL Start shooting some of this and if your like me.. your gonna be hooked :)

Some of the SOs can be misunderstood at times. Their concern isnt that they want to beat up on ya, but that they want to make sure you are safe. Sometimes the shooter takes it the wrong way, but I know several of the SOs in NC since I shoot a bit here. They are just wanting a good, fair, fun, and SAFE experience for everyone. Nearly to a man... good ppl.

What match was this? You mentioned a night match. Wilkesboro? Oxford? or was it an indoor range at Pfafftown (sp)?

First Match

I also shot my first IPSC match this last weekend. Boy what an education is was for me. The RO's were great with me, espically with me having some gun problems. I definatly think I have found a new hobby.

I didn't watch at my first match, I jumped right in and came in dead last. When a newbie shows up at our club (IPSC/IDPA) we encourage them to shoot. We will even loan them the gear and ammo.

We introduce the new guy to one of the old hands who will squad with the new shooter and act as his coach and mentor for the day. Our primary goal is for the new shooter to have fun, not be nervous, and to return with a friend...or two.

withawhat..

if you were at the Pueblo West Match..you did great...that was a challenging match with a lot of shooting and a lot left up to the shooter..think it was about 150 rounds over six stages with 102 shooters...made for a very long day for just a monthly match..

glad you had a good time..if you need help with anything let me know...I try and practice some and always love talking about guns and competing...

Oakseed...glad you enjoyed your experience in competition...I remember my first match ..nerves..seems like everything I knew ... I forgot... anyway..yes...get some mag pouches..extra mags, be safe and HAVE FUN...

Stu...

Yes, he was shooting in Pueblo West, in fact, he was squaded with you, big red-headed kid in a red coat, with my son coachin' him. :) You probably didn't notice though, with 17-22 per squad, and 14 new shooters. :uhoh:

I stayed around until he got through the safety course and Jimmy got there to help, and then I went home and got some farming done.

Hard to choose between shooting and spending the afternoon with my grandson and my johnny-popper, I chose the latter. ;)

Sorry, im not familiar with PDHSC. Its not listed on the IDPA website as an affiliated club in NC. I guess thats why I havent traveled there to shoot. Do these folks have a web site? I may have to ride down and have some fun with a new crowd. I got friends in Raleigh, it would be a good excuse to visit :)

Any info, match dates, directions, etc would be helpful.

Tks

Here you go, Sludge. It's http://www.pdhsc.com

They are a small indoor range located on Tryon Road just off of highway 70 east, south of downtown. It's grown from about 25 shooters to last week's high of 45. There are always plenty of new shooters and the folks are friendly.

Oak,
I'm glad that you enjoyed the match.

THe club that I shoot with requires that a new shooter goes through a short orientation/safety talk before jumping into a match. The orientation/safety class was quick and allowed me to ask questions.

I found that getting paired up with a more experienced person worked out well too.

Good luck to you.

Ok, thanks for the info. I may try to drop down there and pop a few caps with ya next month. Stay the night with a friend and then go to Oxford on Sunday. If ya havent tried Oxford, ya need to. Its hot action up there.

I shot at Oxford for several years, but haven't for the past 7 months or so. Mama and I came to an agreement on Sunday matches. :)

I was shooting 7 matches per month and it was just too much. I miss shooting Oxford, though. Frank definitely puts on a quality match!

7 matches per month! Sniff... sniff... my wife cuts a fit if I shoot more than two...

Once in a while I can get away with about 6 per month, but she quickly puts me back on probation...

Ah PDHSC. You shot at my home range. You're dead on about the guys there. Mike and Carol Tilley are top notch and their son Chris is an amazing shooter.

Who was the instructor that took you outside?

Bump

Acorn......I've created a monster. :D Don't forget who got you into this to begin with. Now your one up on me, and I've got to shoot a better qualification score than you to keep my reputation.:neener:

I am not sure what his name was. He was wearing a hat, but I think he had red hair. Let the record show that I hold his actions as a positive thing and recognize they were in responce to stupidity on my part.

beware of envy it can breed contempt. Friends encourage each other in success and support each other in trouble.

No foul assumed, they really are a great bunch of guys. I was just asking to see if I knew who it was.

I still remember my first match. I also jumped in to shoot rather than watch. Very first stage, first string, first shot, I nailed a hostage in the neck. :)

Be careful, this is a very addictive thing you are messing with here. :p

Truer words...

Sometimes I long for those days when all I was addicted to was smack: it was less expensive and easier to kick. ;)
