I carry a Springfield XD, and my friend carries a Glock 22. I load regular JHP into my firearm, and my friend loads Winchester Supreme JHP +P into his. I have heard good things about this ammo from everyone that I have spoken to, but I didn't think you could use +P ammo in either firearm. I have tried to search Google for an answer, along with the users manuals for both weapons, but have found nothing. So I'm turning to you...Am I missing something??

I know that the +P means that there are higher pressures, and dont want to have my gun explode in my face, and prevent it happening to a friend...

Does anyone know if you can shoot JHP +P in either/both of these weapons? any links to useful information?

Both are .40 S&W if that makes any difference...

No problem in the XD, but I am under the impression that you need a different barrel to safely fire it from a GLOCK BOMB. The tolerances just aren't there in a GLOCK. That being said, I will never own one, not even by accident. Plus they're ugly IMO.

Look in your owners manual. If should specify what the allowed ammunition is. Or contact the manufacturer. For example my M&P9c owners manual allows SAAMI +P but not +P+.

I was reading an XD manual, and was surprised that there wasnt information on +P loads.

They only thing I found was:
Ammunition
Use only fresh factory ammunition such as Winchester®,
Remington®, or Federal®. DO NOT use handloads, reloads,
or remanufactured ammunition in your Springfield
firearm. Only shoot cartridges of the caliber engraved on
the barrel. DO NOT use shot cartridges or any ammunition
which is loaded with a frangible projectile or any ultralight
weight projectile at elevated velocities, or any
wooden or plastic projectile.

Old or reloaded ammunition may cause damage to
the firearm and/or injure you or others. Use
only clean, dry original, high-quality, commercially
manufactured ammunition. Using reloaded
ammunition may void the warranty.

There is no such animal as +P .40 ammo. It may be marked +P, but the pressures are the same as any .40s&w ammo.

9mm+P and .45acp+P are a different story.

hmmm...I also have an XD in 9mm...care to explain..I have never heard this before..

I found this:
.40 S&W +P ammunition is not recommended unless the chamber fully supports the case head. Note that the .40 S&W G***k (G22, G23, G27, and G35) does NOT fully support the case head and most ammunition manufacturers recommend avoiding overpressure ammunition in non-fully supported firearms. The .40 S&W G***ks are excellent pistols (especially the G35) and are known to handle most/all SAAMI spec. brass/copper jacketed factory ammunition exceptionally well.

this is from WikiAnswers, so i know it is not 100% credible, but they must have gotten that from somewhere. There is nothing in either manual. Like "Pietro Beretta" stated, they basically say to shoot factory loads only.

SAAMI has not introduced a +P pressure limit for .40s&w. It's either a sales gimmick like 'high speed' or it's a load that does not conform to SAAMI specs.

Since it's Winchester, I'm sure it's a sales gimmick to let the consumer know that the ammo is loaded to the highest allowable levels.

Not all .40 ammo is. Many loads, especially the practice loads, are loaded to lower than max levels.

With 9mm, .45acp and others, SAAMI has set higher pressure levels for the +p ammunition.
