Going through my dad's stuff, I found a few boxes of +P ammo for his old Remington 760 in .257 Roberts. The rifle went to my sister, and I am scratching my head about whether it's a good idea to use this ammo. If it was a bolt rifle, I would just not worry about it. But this rifle uses the turning bolt with locking lugs, and I have always felt it was a bit rickety. (I have advised my sister to get it looked at.) I told her not to shoot this stuff until I did some homework. Am I just being superstitous?

The +P .257 Roberts is intended for use in modern bolt-action & single-shot rifles.

It is not intended for pumps,semi-autos, or older 93/95 Mausers.

Standard pressure .257 Bob is 45,000 CUP.
+P is 50,000 CUP.

I don't think it would actually hurt a 760, but you might have extraction issues, or not?

They were chambered in hotter factory calibers with the same head size throughout the production history.
.257 Roberts – 1954 = 54,000 & 58,000 +P.
.30-06 Sprg. – 1952 = 60,000 PSI
.270 Win. – 1953 = 65,000 PSI
.308 Win. – 1957 = 62,000 PSI
.280 Rem. – 1958 = 60,000 PSI
.243 Win. – 1968 = 60,000 PSI
6mm Rem. – 1968 = 65,000 PSI

In fact, the more I think about it, the more I would try it!
At best it will work, and at worst they will be hard to extract with a pump action.

Never heard of anyone having issues with any of the hotter ammo in anything other than semi-autos. Like RC said, I doubt it would be dangerous, but since pumps don't have the leverage for extraction that bolt guns have you might have extraction issues, might not.

Seeing as these rifles were chambered for 270win from the get go you certainly wont cause one the slightest distress with any factory 257 load

I've run some pretty hot stuff in my 760 30-06 never an issue shoot it up reload and repeat as desired this is a tough action. You wont hurt it with any factory loaded ammo never had an extraction issue in 30+ years of use.

I agree with rcmodel. I've had long experience with Remington 760s and the only issue I'd worry about is if you have a rough or rusty chamber, which will inhibit easy chambering and/or extraction.
