I DID IT! The wife wants a handgun, in .22. She likes the looks of the walther p22 and sig misquito, so now we are looking for opinions.

Please vote and give your thoughts. You'll note there is no 'other' to vote for ;)

And thanks to the cornered cat website for teaching her to rack a slide better than i could and getting her hooked.

both of these guns don't have the greatest reputations around here. Obviously there are owners of both who are completely happy with their firearm, but there certainly SEEMS to be a higher-than-normal number of people who have had problems with these 2 guns.

looks wise, both guns are awesome...shooting wise/reliability I'm sure a lot of people would say it is best to go the Buckmark/Ruger direction.

I looove the Walther P99 and Sig P series, so I think both the P22 and Mosquito feel absolutely great in-hand. If you end up with one of them, your happiness will probably depend a lot on finding the right type of ammo that your baby will enjoy eating.

I'll add in the S&W M22 and Beretta Neos options.

With the cheap bulk pack ammo our reliability ranking is:

Neos
M22A
Buckmark
our four Rugers.

The gaps between Neos, M22A, & Buckmark are really small, probably not enough to argue about, but the Rugers all fall behind by a fair amount with no significant difference among them.

Our P22 has been very reliable, but its not been shot much at all compared to the others. Don't have a Mosquito.

The M22A (7.5" fluted heavy barrel) is my personal favorite, while my wife prefers the Buckmark (5" bull barrel). We shoot the Rugers a lot because I have a bunch of mags for them -- we typically bring out half a dozen .22 pistols and 1000 rounds of bulk pack loaded in mags. Its too hot here to stand around at the range stuffing mags, while the investment in mags ends up substantial, loading them in air-conditioned comfort prior to an outing sure beats the alternative.

Also the Rugers go fewer rounds between cleanings that the other and are a good bit more aggravating to do so, except the Buckmark is almost as much of a PITA needing two different sized hex head wrenches to take apart and having several small spring loaded parts ready to jump out if you remove the right side grip. Fortunately it rarely needs to be disassembled (like about twice in six years). OTOH I'll never be accused of over cleaning my guns :)

My P22 was a pain in the butt till I figured out that the safety switch was slightly moving under recoil and causing my next shot to go click. I don't specifically remember any other issues, but it seems like there have been some others. I wish I had just gotten a ruger. With that being said, the last thousand rounds or so have been all trouble free. I guess just a rough break in time on my specific pistol soured me a bit. On the plus, no recoil, and pretty dang accurate. Now that it works, it's pretty fun!

Owning both the Walther P22 and the Browning Buck Mark, I would go with the Buck Mark.
The Walther is nice, moderny, and all, but it has a potmetal slide, and the barrel can shoot loose. There's a collar that can be used to tighten it and it comes with the tool, so it's not a big deal, just inconvenient. I haven't had problems with the P22 but I just don't think it's what a "Walther" should be.

The Buck Mark is a larger grip (which I like; your wife may have other opinions) and it is made out of real metal like a gun should be.

I just bought the Sig myself , after doing some of my own research i found that most people recomended the Mosquito.
Most complaints came from the ammo, i think if the gun requires better ammo to run better then use it, we are talking .22's here. . I haven't fired it yet but will give a report as soon as i do.

My wife has a Walther P22. She absolutely loves it. I also love it now, since I cut 3/8" off the recoil spring. My Smith 22S also needed to have some spring cut off. Amazing the factory doesn't realize this. They could eliminate craploads of bad press if they would only test these things. Mine actually went back to Smith, and they sent the P.O.S. back unrepaired, claiming it was repaired. Had to fix it myself. Nice C.S., Smith. NOT.
The Sig Mosquito also had serious ammo issues. I'm guessing, guessing mind you, that a bit of recoil spring cut off would solve a lot of these issues too. I should get one cheap from someone that is fed up with theirs, just to see if I'm right.

Be aware, the P22 is SMALL, but a fantastic fitting grip. The Mosquito is more full size, relatively speaking. Both are fun to shoot. Knock yourself out!

mosquito...m-o-s-q-u-i-t-o... mosquito
sorry about my spelling.

thanks for the comments and votes so far! i'm aware of ruger and browning and what they have to offer (spent today shooting ruger), but half the interest for the wife is getting a gun she WANTS to shoot, and that includes looks. and she hates the way the ruger looks.

love to hear more personal experiences and see some more pics!
thanks again

I've read a lot about the buckmark and the ruger being great guns but I wanted something that was similar in shape to my CZ Rami 2075 but much cheaper to shoot so I bought the Mosquito.

After close to 500 rounds (mini mags and inexpensive 15 year old remingtons) I have had no issues with firing or feeding.

And, it's a lot of fun to shoot.

I had no luck with those pistols, liked the misquito so much that I tried it twice. P22 was jam city and Misquito would slam shut when mag was put in.
The Browning is great !!!

Despite the facat that you decided not to offer the option, your poll should contain a neither option; I suspect that it would win hands-down. The Ruger Mark series, the Browning Buck Mark series, one of the nice Colts -- lots of decent options are out there for you to consider. The SIG and the Walther are not good options; sorry. Save your money-- and your frustration level -- and devote it to a handgun that you and your wife can be proud of.

I've run into two couples that use the Mosquito. Both were more than happy with it but both admitted to how it is very fussy about what ammo it eats. Sorry, I don't recall which it was.

It's also possible that with some care and attention you can tune the recoil spring to work better with whatever. I had the same issue with a .22 of mine. It would shoot expensive standard velocity CCI just fine. But I wanted to use the cheaper Blazer and Federal. Oddly enough the answer was to make up a LIGHTER recoil spring for the more powerful HV stuff. Seems that the bullet was coming out so much faster that the gas pressure impulse on the casing was shorter and thus less strong overall. Swapping to a lighter recoil spring did the job and it's shooting HV stuff like a champ.

So keep it in mind. If you want to tune it to an ammo that normally jams and only weakly dribbles the empties out the answer is actually a weaker, or clipped stock recoil spring.

Mosquitos are just fine if you take care to feed them properly. Mine only likes CCI Mini Mags. As long as I feed it those...it is 100% reliable, accurate, and most of all...FUN.

I have yet to have a problem out of my Mosquito. There are those out there who do have problems, just like with any other gun model.

The positives are thus:
1. Is basically a 90% sized Sig P226 gun. Everything is there that is on the big guns. Which will mean you can move up easily as the controls are the exact same.
2. Cheap to shoot. Even if you have to buy CCI Mini Mags...it's still cheap to shoot compared to my .380 (gasp) and .45 ACP.
3. Threaded barrel models mean suppressor goodness is just a $200 tax stamp away.

YMMV and all that...but they are good guns if properly fed and managed. Good luck with whatever your choice may be.

Sig p226/9 classic .22. Give you the option to convert to 9mm, .40, or .357 sig later. I have no experience with it, but it seems like a great option.

I own Sig Misquito and love it also. The gun has two small issues the first is it likes CCI Mini-Mags. Feed it that and you can put over 1000 runds down range without issue. Second is that you can put the recoil spring in backwards, If you do it will jam about every shot, of course following the directions and putting it in the correct way solves this.

I have had my mosquito for about 2 months and love it. Stick to ammo that has a nice round shape and you should be good. Avoid these like the plague: almost all Winchester, Remington other than golden bullet.

I have 2 mosquitos and love them both. I shoot CCI Minimag and Federal Game Shok for the best reliability. My neighbor can run Remington Thunderbolt through his but I haven't tried it yet. Last time I went to the range I tried the Federal 325 round match grade value pack you can get from walmart and did not have a single problem. That's cheap shooting compared to my other guns. I'd say give the mosquito a try, just don't buy the cheapest 22 ammo you can find and expect it to run flawlessly.

Just a heads up...If you're only going to the range with 2 or 3 mags then a 9 shot 22 revolver is just as fast, if not faster to shoot and reload.

I'd go with the mosquito out of the choices you listed.

I have a P22 and it doesn't seem to be as finicky with ammo as the Mosquito a friend has. I have run everything from Aguila to Remington, from subsonic to hyper velocity out of mine and it has run great. While subsonic stuff wasn't 100%, it was maybe 90-95%. With the standard velocity and up ammo it has been 100% reliable. It's real easy to take down and clean, too, which I have only done once in the 4-5K.

Forgot to mention this in my reply to you.. make sure you check out the Mosquito in white digital and in person if possible. I think the Mosquito is the best looking .22LR out there and the digital white improves on that by 10X. My wife and I both saw one at a gun show a few months ago and were both immediately drawn to it.
Also notice that most people that shoot CCI Mini Mags are very happy with their Mosquito. That is the only ammo that has been nearly flawless for me. All the rest were just exercises in frustration. I think I've had less than 5 FTEs with the Mini Mags and most of those I attribute to the crappy plastic magazine I picked up at Academy. Definitely only stick with the steel one. I also have problems with the spring and almost always have to look at the manual to remember which way it goes :D

I have both a Mosquito and a P22. I also have a Ruger 22/45 and a S&W 22A. Just added a Buckmark to the herd.. I taught my wife to shoot with the 22A. However she has taken control of the P22. She likes the way it fits and feels in the hand. Once I got the suppressor for it it was all over. She never let's me shoot the thing anymore. I had to go get the PK380 for her because wanted something with more power to it for at the house and to use for defense.

For the OP it should come down to what your wife finds fits her better and she can shoot better. That will keep her happy and shooting more. There are a lot of detractors for those pistols but there are also thousands of people who have and like them. Mine have never given me any issues. I just followed the break-in suggested in the manual and they run fine. In fact both of mine run with a suppressor, using subsonics, without any issues also.
