P220 & Custom Grip

Well - I finally went and did it. After much research here and on other forums I broke down and bought me a .45ACP pistol. ;) Got a brand new blued Sig P220 with Night Sights. I haven't fired it yet - that's tomorrow with any luck but I've dry fired the heck out of it and man does it feel nice in my hand. Way more comfortable than the Glock and CZ I've got and way more comfortable than the 1911's I remember from the Army.

EXCEPT for one thing - I'm not a big fan of of the black plastic grip. The size and shape are great but I'm just not wild about the plastic. Which made me wonder if one can get custom grips for the 220?

I know - I know - I could do a google search and probably find out but you guys are so smart and have so much experience with this stuff (and truth be known y'all love to voice your opinions) I figured I'd ask y'all.

Custom grips available for P220? If so from who? Recommendations? PICS?
 
Look long and hard at Nill grips, and also Hogue woods.

They are a little wider than the factory plastics, but usually ooze quality.

Hogue makes some pretty wood grips for the Sig 220, which is a great choice on your part. You will enjoy it for a very long time.

However, the Hogue wood and rubber grips for the 220 both dramatically increase the size of the grip. Check them on someone else's gun before you buy them.

Those Hogue grips in exotic woods are really, really nice. I especially like the Kingwood checkered and will be getting a set of those.

Took a look at the Nill Grips site. Very nice but about 40% more expensive than Hogue and only one style available that I saw.

What I'd really like though is some simulated ivory grips or maybe stag (simulated stag is OK) - I think that would really look nice - can't find any though.

Welcome to the Sig world of Commander-size 45's

I tried some Hogue Coco Bolo wood side-textured grips, but the palm/rear was too slick/smooth, so I sold them and got Hogue full grip wrap around on mine.. No complaints.

Might want to spend an additional 24bucks and also get some Hogue side-panel-only rubber grips as well.. (which I love/use on my P229/40's

But, then, there's always some better wood grips that have texture all the way around.. and wood looks so good, if you step up, like some Nills

Here's what mine looked like with wood grips but added slip on sleeve to remedy palm/rear slippage but was too much girth/width in all..

This is what I have on it for nearly 3yrs now.. it's, to me, thin feeling, which I like but stable, especially with one handed shots.

Carry/220 grips are same (size) as full size 220.. Got any pics of the wood grips.. ?

SIG also sells aluminum grip panels, which are thinner than the original plastic, and come in black or natural.
 
the Hogue aluminum grips are a bit thinner and more contoured...they are extremely comfortable. the same grips are available in G10

This is what I was thinking of regarind the OP. You might want to try the plastic grips for a while just to see if they grow on you. I had put on some Hogue grips and they were comfortable but the Sig felt a bit fatter to handle. I eventually went back to the plastic Sig grips and then about six months ago upgraded to some newer Sig manufactured plastic grips that are slimmer than the standard one. This really gives the Sig a nice feel. My second choice would the be the slim Sig manufactured metal grips which are a bit spendy.

Talk about a zombie thread...

I'm still kickin' and I still have the gun. It now has a set of soft rubber grips (pachmyr or hogue, I forget) with finger grooves on it. Made a difference, albeit a small one, in how well I shoot it.

In the six years since the original post I've come to the slow conclusion that I just don't like DA/SA triggers and thus my Sigs and DA/SA CZ's don't get shot much anymore and definitely aren't carried on a daily basis.

And no all you soft hearted guys that can't bear to see a gun not regularly used, I am not going to send them to you where they'd be happier. :) They're just fine enjoying their peaceful retirements.

Might want to call Wolff springs up, get a package of his main springs for your 220, dump the 24lb one and try a 17lb or 18lb main spring for a light, quick, DA pull.

Worked wonders on my P229's, and like you, my 220 only gets office duty, very little range time anymore but someday, it too, will get a new wolff main spring

Kits come with, IIRC, 5 springs, from: 20, 19, 18, 17, 16lbs.. Using the 17lb and 18lb has, thru, some 4000 rounds on each 229/40 with no light strikes..

DA pulls are light, easy, and smooth.. fyi (very predictable) and changing one's main spring out is EASY to do by one's self except for inserting temp (paper clip) into slot/hole to hold new spring in place just prior to putting it back into grip. Wife works well here..

Ps.. ITDUKE, grips will not work on DA/SA - no slot for decocker to operate - sorry. But someone wants those grips

Good to see these threads have such longevity! I'm shopping for a P220 now, and, I'm already looking for grips. Can the Elite grips be purchased seperately? Thank you.

No, but check the SIG forum classified section. Owners frequently sell and purchase OE grips.
 
I have a Sig P220 Elite Dark with Houge wrap around rubber grips with finger grooves and love them. They realy soften the recoil and make the gun a pleasure to shoot.
 
Well, I almost didn't notice this thread is OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD and I wasn't going to post but for those looking for grips for their P220 I have to disagree with this statement.

I switched to the Hogue rubber grips on my P220 (NO finger grooves) and while they are about the same in width as the stock grips they are shorter front to back and the rubber gives a little so the overall effect is a smaller grip, not a larger one. I have short fingers and they make a big difference for me.
