If your life was on the line, which one would you like to be with you, a stamped steel folded slide German P220 or a Colt Commander? I am looking at the topic exactly from reliability espect.
Regards.

IF I had test fired both to ensure reliability, either one. Right out of the box I would choose the Sig though.

Since I'm not familiar with the Sig it's a no brainer for me and I'd pick the Colt. I have two commanders and feel quite comfortable with them. I also like the single action triggers so likely won't be getting familiar with the Sig.

Agreed. With the chance to test them for reliability I would carry the Colt. The original (or "Lightweight") Commander is roughly the same size and weight as the P220, but holds the same amount of ammo, is slimmer, flatter, fits my hand much better and has only one trigger pull to deal with. But, the SIG I had fired thousands of rounds without a bobble, while a Colt Combat Commander was jam city. Sorry. :(

I would pick the sig. Though I do like 1911's, I would prefer to be able to carry with a round in the chamber, hammer down and not have to worry about an accidental discharge or having to think about cocking it to fire.

Commander vs Sig 220

Smith & Wesson 4566; and they should bring it back with an alloy frame. I honestly can't tell the difference when holding one from a 220. I have a CQB and have found it a great carry piece. Dead reliable and accurate; half the price, lifetime warranty; no down side.
Know I'm not the only one.
Cheers, TF

Sig P220. I have never had a FTF, FTE, or any mechanical issues with mine despite being decades old and having shot tens of thousands of rounds thru them. I wish I could say the same of my Colts (altho I will admit that my 9mm Combat Commander was pretty close to flawless while I had it).

Either the Sig design is simply less fiddly, or Sig simply holds to the blueprints better - dunno which. But my Sigs have been far less worrisome than my Colts, of that there is no doubt in my mind.

Sig - but most of my handguns are of that trigger type.

Like my Colt 1911's though - just not trained for carry with them. When I want/need to carry a flat 1911 it's my Para Ordinance LDA.

I've had both. The Sig was junk when a case head blew out. The same thing happened with a Colt & only the grips & magazine were trashed. I'm going with the Commander on this one.

All my 1911's have proven to be perfectly reliable. I'd feel comfortable carrying any one of them. For carry (dream on . . I live in California) I would probably prefer one of my P220's. DA to SA transition is just fine for me.

Out of the box it would definately be a Sig over a 1911. Now if given time to handle the firearms and the 1911 proved to be reliable, it would have to be the 1911.

Both are great guns, but IMHO..

Straight out of the box..?

Without doubts, I'd steer ya towards the Sig P220 SAO Carry model 45cal.

Best of both worlds, SAO, (same trigger pull every time) ambi thumb slide safety, 8+1 rounds, and there is no "break in" period, they just shoot, and shoot, and shoot.

Also, one of, if not, the easiest guns to disassemble, inspect, clean, reassemble, bar none.. KEY

Many new 1911's require break-in, testing, of what brand, type, ammo they will shoot and won't shoot, i.e. jam with, a lot.

For the least amount of worry, or time invested in to shooting with dependability and reliability.. Sig P220 Carry, SAO, DAK, or DA/SA, your choice.

Easy, Sig P220, german stamped/folded slide, hands down. 100% reliable straight from the box. Carry hammer down and fire without recocking. If you are a 1911 fan, you're gonna choose the Colt, but I prefer the Sig, and I carry Sigs (including a 220 when I am dressed to cover it) for ccw.

i grew up with the 1911 platform and the commander lenght is my favorite, but...

for out of the box reliability and continued service under rough use the sig 220 would win hands down.

i love the feel of a 1911 but i have trusted my life to the sig for a long while now

The Commander is a fine weapon. But I'd take the P220 over just about any 1911. As far as I'm concerned, the P220 is the 1911's heir apparent.
