I like 1911's but, I'd take the Sig without even thinking about it. I have less experience with 1911's and much more experience with Sigs. The P220 just WORKS period. Doesn't need barrel throating or tuning up out the box, etc it just works and works ALL the time. I know there are plenty of good 1911's out there, however I have never had a single problem with my P220 that wasn't my own fault so having the peace of mind knowing that I own something that, in my experience, will work reliably is well worth it IMO. I think having something that you are comfortable with is a major deciding factor. That being said, plenty of people will have probably had the same positive experiences with their 1911's and prefer them, and there is nothing wrong with that. I'm not saying either is necessarily better, just that I prefer one over the other.
I have never owned a Colt Combat Commander but I do own a DW Classic Bobtail that has the same dimensions and I own a Sig P220. If my life was on the line I would be comfortable with either gun, probably more comfortable with the Dan Wesson because of most of my practice is done with a 1911. Reliability has not been an issue with either gun.
The Combat Commander sized 1911 is much more suitable for carrying than the P220 in my opinion.
