P365 XL disappointed

How well did you clean it before you shot the gun? I have seen some P365's so coated in grease that we use half can of brake cleaner just to get all the crud out this included the striker channel and recoil spring assembly.
That said, It is my belief that any well fit gun needs a couple of hundred rounds fired to smooth things out. If I were you I would run a couple boxes of 147 grain ammo following a complete de-greasing and re-lubing before calling Sig.
I heard that was a problem for a while, so when I received my P365 a couple of weeks ago, I stripped it down to clean it. It was the cleanest new pistol I've ever seen inside. No grease, no shavings, no grit, and just a nice even coat of light oil over everything. I specifically swabbed out the striker channel and inspected it and it was very clean. Put it back together with some CLP and it has been flawless so far.

Holding in my right hand, I can see how maybe during recoil my thumb might inadvertently hit the slide release lever...

I am not at all denigrating your grip but your hands are small compared to mine. To explain what they are talking about with the extension my ring finger will be against the extension lip, my middle finger wedged against the trigger guard, my thumb has to be held away from the gun as it would ride the slide and contact the slide stop under recoil. With my support hand I have to float the thumb as well as I would ride slide and the slide lock with the heel of my hand. I have to make sure I get my thumb knuckles tight together or I'm in danger of degloving my support hand finger tip in front of the muzzle.

Without the extension my hands fully enclose the butt of the gun "teacupping" it and leaving nothing visible from the bottom of my hands.

Needless to say it took awhile for me to learn to handle a gun with so little real estate without interference with the controls or slide.
