P38 "Blocks"

Going through various ads online, I see P38s as having "C" blocks, "B" blocks, etc.

What does that mean?

WW II VINTAGE P38 serial numbers generally have 4 digit serial numbers. Every 10k, they'd add a letter suffix. It aids in dating the manufacture now.
