P6 marksmanship breakthrough

I've fired almost a thousand rounds through my P6 since I got it a few months ago. For most of those rounds I had developed a nasty flinch, specifically when shooting single action. This is my first semi-automatic in a loooong time, I've been carrying double action S&W K-frames for the last few years.

Last weekend we went shooting and I had a marksmanship breakthrough. Normally I shoot about a 10" group at 10 yards. On Sunday I was consistantly shooting 6" groups at 25 yards! I don't know what happened, but it seems like all at once I figured out how to manage a "surprise break" of the SA trigger and all of my flinching stopped. I tried some combat drills and was noticably better with those as well. What a day!

I really really like the DA/SA Sig trigger, now that I'm used to it.

I wish I could post some pics of the target from that day, but I was using the same ones to shoot some rimfire as well so they aren't very presentable. Here's a pic from a past range session (It's rude to make a range day post with no pics)

6" at 10yards? No offense, but you need another breakthrough.
Six inches at 10 yards is better than 90% of the people I see at the range. It's also more than adequate for self-defense purposes.

Having said that - greater proficiency is always a goal.

If you read my post, I said 6" at 25 yards.
And *that* is sterling, at least by my standards. I can usually do no better than 8"-10" at 25 yards, and most folk can't stay on the dang paper at that range.

Enjoy the P6 - I think that they're tops.

6" at 25 yards on any given day is very good shooting, with a P6 it's outstanding.

I can do it with my P226, but not my P6.

My mistake, and my apology...misread your post.
I have an '83 dated P6 and just love it. It quickly became my favorite CCW pistol.
I use a Don Hume clip on leather holster which was made for the P6 supposedly, but fit a little loose...I wet-molded, and now it is great. I also picked up a German P6 shoulder holster made of nylon. What holster are you using?
My preferred SD 9mm load is the 124gn +P GoldDot, and my P6 handles it with ease.
My club had 10" swinging steel plates at 40 yards, and I have no problem hitting them.
The P6 is one of the best deals in a serious pistol ever. I just wish a company like MecGar would bring out some low priced mags.

6" at 10 yards is fine shooting...

I don't know everything, but I doubt that 357wheelgunner is talking about shooting from a rest or off hand taking 4 minutes to empty 1 clip. Rather he is most likely talking about shooting from the weaver ready or draw with a 1-2 second pause between each round (really depends on the rules at the range).

I view "combat shooting" as different from "presicion shooting".

Combat shooting - Draw weapon, sight center mass fire fire fire fire fire fire fire, reload.

Precision shooting - Get sight picture, hold breath, sight again, fire, get sigh picture, hold breath, sight again, fire.

Not to mention that most P6 pistols I have seen needed a match barrel. The German's kept them clean, but they didn't respect the crown of the barrel.

Thanks for the responses everyone!

No problem! Good thing you were at the High Road, otherwise I might have been more sarcastic and rude (just kidding!)

. What holster are you using?

It's a Blade Tech IWB. They're having a sale now at www.blade-tech.com , they make fantastic usable holsters.

You can get factory magazines for $35 now from topgunsupply.com

Exactly!

I don't believe in benchresting combat handguns, and I'd feel kind of silly shooting it with one arm extended and the other in my pocket, bullseye style.

I practice a mixture short range rapid fire point shooting and long range, improvised rest aimed fire. I like to stretch the range with my service handguns, and even fire them out to 100 yards...havn't tried that with the P6, yet. I regularly shoot my Beretta 92fs that far, however.
The German issue nylon shoulder holster is interesting..J&G Sales has them pretty cheap. They have a spare mag pouch on the offside. The Germans always have to do something "different" with their holsters...In this case, they give you a piece of leather cord on either side to tie off to your belt.
I disagree with the often repeated critcism of the DA pull on the P6. Mine was a little heavy, but quite usable when I got it. The more I shoot it, and lube it, the better it gets.
