I've had a Sig P6 (original version/P225) for a while now. I find that I shoot it less well than my other pistols; and yes, I am concentrating on the same fundamentals with all of them. I also find that when using the grip I prefer, that my thumb rides the slide release just enough to prevent the slide from locking open on an empty magazine about half the time.

I recently had a chance to handle the P320, both full-size and compact versions. I found the grip to be very comfortable, and the trigger was nice IMO. I like the modularity also (though I find it disappointing that I can't get 9mm and .45 in the same chassis).

I know that the gun is getting good accuracy reviews. I'm curious if anyone with experience on both pistols could speak to the slide stop - is the lever on the P320 more "avoidable" than on the P6? I shoot with both thumbs forward as do many others, if that helps.

I am considering trading up - but if I find/feel the P320 isn't going to address the problem I may look into a CZ compact of some flavor instead, as I really like both my SP01 and P07.

Thanks!

Well, I can't help you with the SIG P6/225 as I have not shot one. I do have a full-size P320 45 and I have not personally had any issues with the slide stop. I use a so-called Leatham/Enos thumb over thumb forward grip but my strong side right thumb rests atop the base of my weak side thumb so it does not contact the slide stop lever. Obviously, your grip might differ and the slide stop lever could be an issue.

But the plot thickens because the SIG P320 has already gone through three different slide stop levers to my knowledge. SIG modified the original lever in response to complaints like yours about slide lock failure due to riding the relatively thick lever.

Take a look at the first post in this thread and you will see photos of the original and the latest version of the slide stop lever:

Note that the original lever stood fairly proud of the adjacent grip module and pointed rearwards. The newest lever has been thinned down considerably and points forward. The pistol in the photos has the original style grip module which had a little ridge molded in just beneath the lever. The new lever will work with the older grip module but the molded ridge is out of place.

This photo shows yet another version of the P320 slide stop lever:

Note that the shelf on the original lever has been thinned down considerably but it still points rearwards.

Lastly, here is a photo of the newest (and hopefully) final version of the P320 slide stop lever and the new grip module:

Note that the new grip module has a thicker ridge that surrounds the lever on its bottom, front, and back sides. I have not heard too many complaints about slide lock failure with the new P320 lever and grip module.

Again, I have no issues with the original lever that some complained about. Obviously, the only way to know if you will have an issue is to shoot a P320 but if you do, try to find one with the new style lever and grip.

For what it is worth, the SIG P320 is probably the most accurate handgun I now own.

It all depends on your individual grip. Some will have issues with the P320 gen 1 but no issues with Gen 2 or vice versa. Only way to know is get one shoot if if you have issues switch it out.

Superb Hi-cap 9mm

Just bought a P320 Compact and now have 150 rounds through it. Rounds 76-150 were at a Steel Challenge last Tuesday night, my first time shooting in one. Placed 6th out of 25 shooting the P320. I was shooting the cheapest ammo I could find, Remington value line, 115gr RN. Not one malfunction or problem at all. A guy I met had malfunction trouble with a S&W 9mm and shot mine to finish.

At the end of the night everyone through some money into a bucket and got 1-5 shots at 60-ish yards. The target was a 12oz water bottle, and it was night, so lighting was iffy. First shot took down the bottle! Second shot nicked the cap.

For a 3.9" barrel, this gun is accurate. More than a few people wanted to see what I was shooting after that. Combined with what I think is fantastic ergos and a sweet trigger, and this is my new favorite 9mm.

Also rittmeister if you want to give it a try I have a modified slide stop which has had some of the lever ground off. It was on my P226 for a while. Shoot me a pm and we can work something out.
