For those that own both a CZ P07 and a P09, do you feel the P07 makes the larger gun redundant?

I've had a P07 for a few years and thoroughly enjoy it. It's the original "DUTY" version with the fixed backstrap. I am greatly impressed with the light weight, accuracy, and the fact that the grip is pretty much the same dimensions as my Sig P6 but it holds twice as many rounds. I shoot it as well as anything in my collection.

I just picked up a P09 locally; I figured a bigger version of the P07 would be really cool, and of course it is! I got it to a plinking session today and found it to be just as accurate and controllable as the P07. Actually I shot it side-by-side with my SP01 and it felt just like a lighter version of that gun.

The thing is, the long grip that accommodates the 19-round mags is far too long for me to carry. It's longer than the "full-size" frame of the SP01 as well.

I won't be competing with it (no time); it's a bit redundant as an HD gun with the SP01 in the safe.

I can't help but think that I should get rid of it, and that the P07 will pretty much fill my needs. I can get extended mags for it if I need more capacity.

Honestly, what I really want is a P09 slide on a P07-sized frame. It fits but the dust cover on the P07 frame is too short, leaving some of the recoil spring exposed. I wonder if anyone has shortened a P09 grip frame and set it up to use P07 magazines and backstraps...

Thoughts?

Use the 09 for home protection and the 07 for dedicated carry.

I do the same with my family of PX4 Storms, as such;

- PX4 Sub Compact - deep carry or extensible (extensible because it can use 13, 15 or 17 round mags.
- PX4 Compact - EDC
- PX4 Full Size - Range/Home Protection/Heavy Carry
- PX4 Special Duty - Range/Heavy Carry

For YOUR situation it sounds like it might be redundant. The full size pistol is already a bit of a niche weapon, and you have two. They are great for what they do (hold a lot of rounds, less recoil, long sight radius, etc.), but aren't as flexible as the compacts. If you disagree, ask the SEALs why they are now using the Glock 19.

You could use the P09 as a car gun or something, to supplement your carry gun (P09 mags will fit in P07), but then you run into issues of it being stolen. Maybe you want to trick one of your full size pistols out as a range toy and use the other for HD?

Otherwise I have seen at least one Glock 17 modified down into a Glock 19 grip length. You might want to ask about the feasibility of this on czfirearms.us or contact CZ Custom or Cajun Gunworks. If you do so, please update us since this would be a neat firearm.

My P-07 is rapidly making ALL of my other 9mm guns except my Kahr redundant. It's everything the Glock 19 is but with a good trigger and a grip angle that suits me.

I own a P07, and considered a P09 at one point. To me, though, once I get to the size of a P09 I'd just as well go all metal. My full size gun is a CZ-75B, although if I had the opportunity to get an SP01 that would have been my first choice. I figure if I'm going to go full size, I'm not worrying about concealment and the additional weight of metal is nice for recoil reduction.

Reading your post makes me think that you aren't finding much use for your P-09, so it is largely redundant for you. I don't have any of the plastic CZs but I can relate to your situation because I have several of the steel guns including 75 B, 85 Combat, 75 PCR, and 75 P-01. I LOVE the two compacts but they do not make me ignore the full size guns at all. The compacts are for carry, are a lot of fun to shoot and practice with, and are accurate. The full size are even more fun to shoot, and are even more accurate. I could carry the full size guns if I wanted but the compacts make more sense so I doubt I will.

I have both.

First, I don't think you can really shorten the frame on the P09 like you can on the Glock, at least not as easily. The mainspring and the plug that hold it in run all the way down the length of the backstrap, so you would have to find a way to shorten that assembly. Probably not trivial.

I think these are awesome guns at any price, but the fact you can get one for $450, I think they are the best bang for the buck out there.

My P09 is crazy accurate, like a regular metal frame CZ. My P07 is not that accurate, but not bad either. Not sure if this is standard, or just a quirk with my specific guns.

But I love them both and don't have any plans to get rid of either of them. The P07 instantly supplanted my G19 for holster carry, and if I were going to shoot a plastic gun in competition again, it would be P09, no question.

The trigger can be made to be very good; as mentioned, mine is very accurate; it tracks and returns to battery very nicely; lots of aftermarket support, etc, it just hits all the right qualities for me.

Sounds like the P09 is a bit redundant in your overall scheme of things. Nowadays I prefer compact or smaller size 9mm.s. I have enough full size 9mm.s for range use that I really don't need any more. Plus I have a rather small size hand and while the P07 fits me perfectly, the P09 doesn't have the same handling and balance qualities of it's smaller counterpart.
