South PA, and a bit West of center!
Well ... new range to me. Yesterday I went over his direction for a change and we shot at a most useful small range only a coupla miles from his place. Pretty ideal from many standpoints.

It is a thirty plus acre (IIRC) set within about 750 acres or so - and well away from habitation ..... thus great with regard to no noise worries and, pretty huge clear distance beyond furthest target stand (500 yds I think).

We shot rifle quite a bit - mostly 100 and 200 ... and he demonstrated just what a staggeringly good .22-250 rifle and load he has ... two shots keyholed at 200! I quite forget make right now. Groundgogs beware!

A cell phone was ''written off'' at 100 yds ... with some .17's .. (gotta get one) and he ably trashed a mouse at same distance with his Encore (first shot). He then proceeded to sever the remaining dangling cord in two places.!!

I had some serious doubts with Tasco scopes when my Savage 99C (.243) and .... my Ruger 77 MkII (.223) both seemed to have changed zero - badly - since last shoot when both seemed on. More checks needed but those scopes may have to go!

Plenty of handgun practice also enjoyed as well as the inevitable .22 rifle.

His wife came along for a spell - and proved with little trouble that she is one heck of a proficient person .... with about ANY firearm. Oh my - I just love seeing shooting spouses! :)

Pics of range below ... ''long and narrow'' but excellent ... 6 position firing point with solid benches .. and target positions ''plateau'ed'' nicely. Good place to shoot. There ya go - boring to most but - heck - we had a great afternoon.

Incidentally ... as it got dark I tried some muzzle flash shots, but with my better camera. Anyone explain ... NO image at all .... after 1 sec exposure ... and at different f stops ... f11, f5.6 and wide open .... zilch, nada .... despite raging Lunatic putting out a good flame front!!! After five attempts gave up.

It is puzzling me right now -- Gotta find an answer.

Geez, no image after 1 sec exposure?? What film were you using (or was it a digi)?

Is that range in PA? That is quite close to what I would envision as the Garden of Eden. That is some severe temptation to move out to that neck of the woods...

Great range (as in the actual range :p ) report. ;)

Wes

Thanks for writing this up Chris , had a great time as usual for us , my wife showing up was a bonus ~ even surprised me ! And she is handy with a gun too ! Must be the 20+ years around me.

Turns out I didn't take many pics, so here is a different view of the range and another of the bench.

The most ammo I expended (other than 22) was with my 223 T/C Encore, the thing is just scary accurate , even for a hand rifle.

Wes, yes the range is in PA , very close to the Blair ~ Cambria county line if your lookin at a map, less than 10 min for me , about 45 for Chris. The range was built by our club in a recovered coal strip mine area , the 30 inside 750 acres Chris mentioned is correct, also to the whole right of the range looking downrange is a locally owned watershed area , owned by the gov entity that supplies water to the town , that is an additional 1800 acres which won't be developed.

Although one should never say never (esp. because of 4 wheelers in the woods) the only way you "theoretically" should be able to hurt anything is to turn around 180 and fire out the back of the shelter.

This range was built in response to a buildup around our clubhouse range which generated some noise whiners even though the range was established in 1946 , long before there were any houses in the area. The club didn't cave completely though as we still have a range at the clubhouse and trap is shot there several times a week. Ray

Nice pics of what looks like a very nice range, Chris. Sounds like y'all had a good day. You're making me jealous... been a few weeks since I've been "out" - just can't seem to find the time.

Love to find a 200 yard range in my neck of the woods.

Shucks .... didn't expect any replies - thx.

Ray .... glad you spotted the thread and filled in the gaps .... I didn't remember all details. We reckon that in fact a whole day could be spent at a range with just Thompson Contenders ..... they are remarkable pieces. I think my Contender is just as ''scary'' accurate as Ray's Encore .... but he just shoots better than me!:p

Wes ... yep - pretty idyllic sort of place (if you ignore the track that needs negotiated to get to it haha!:D ) ... truck is preferable to car! That camera exposure .. digi cam ... my Minolta that I use for most stuff these days. I still fail to see how even a blurred image would not register during a 1 sec exposure. A mystery I have yet to solve.

Dale .... how you doin? :) Settling in well I trust. Indeed .. having extra distance beyond 100 yds is a real plus .. I'd like sometime to stretch things to 300 and really do some ballistic comparisons.

Unfortunately it was far from a full day - just later pm ... Ray pretty much racing up there straight after work. So by time targets out and all ready to go ... probably well past 4.00pm .... and now light is going earlier .. not really much more than a 4 hour session ... and you know how time flies! Nonetheless ... most enjoyable, as is pretty much any range time.

Trapper .......
Chris - Next time try it with the lens-cap off.
Haha! Yeah right!! ..... :D :neener: :neener:

Chris:

Yup... settled in quite nicely. Finally got the home theater installed - that was a major engineering feat (mounted a 50" plasma on the masonry wall above the fireplace... it ain't going anywhere :) ). Also been working on getting the workshop in shape (detached 2-car garage that needed waterproofing before the tools moved in).

So my "winter projects" are all lined up - settling into the shop and getting things organized in there, cleaning up a few mil surp rifles I've accumulated over the past few months and stashed away cosmoline and all, stuff like that. Assuming I can pull myself away from the TV long enough to get some stuff done, that is :D

Oh - and as of two weeks ago I'm a grandpa... Little Abigail arrived the morning of the surprise 60th birthday party we had organized for my dear wife. Luckily the timing of her arrival (not to mention hurricane Charlie's path) cooperated and all went smoothly. Got grandkid #2 coming in September (each of my two boys will be papas then).

Guess I'll have a pretty busy winter!
