P99 or XD

Reliability is my biggest priority. I've seen the XD torture tests, and I've never had an FTF with my own.

I've handled both, both feel fine. I guess my larger concern is the reliability of the P99, as I've heard both good and bad things about it, but I like to ask the shooters here as opposed to the odd guy who might have caused his own malfunction due to inexperience.

Upon mention by some of the responses here, I did look at magazine prices, and that has kind of made up my mind for me.

I've actually never heard any bad things about p99 reliability...or experienced them.

Look at SW99 magazine prices, mags are a little cheaper without the walther stamp.

Keep in mind that the Walther P99 and the SW99 magazines are interchangable. You can often find some great deals on the S&W mags that work fine in the Walther model.

Swift, ask any weapons instructor and they will advise you to stick to one platform.

that's cool and all, but there's also a point when its okay to make decisions for yourself as an adult lol, and if I'm spending my money I want to be able to enjoy what I own. to me, part of that enjoyment would be getting to shoot different guns if I wanted to.

I have a P99 which is one of my two daily carries. I recommend that you try out any pistol that you plan on using or carrying as no two people are physically the same. I did not originally look at the P99 but got an opportunity to try one out a few times. It is a very good pistol as are a lot of others available. The key was it fit me well and carries great in a Blade Tech holster. It shoots fine. I have had no FTF or FTE with it. I have put over 5000 rounds downrange with it.

Good luck in your search.

Walther P99

I own and carry the WALTHER P99 off duty. It has a similar operating drill to the H&K P2000 that I am issued.

Personally, I really like the WALTHER. It is accurate and mine has been 100% reliable. The grip is what sold me. It is the most comfortable that I have found.

My experience with the XD is limited. I shot one at a range and did not like it. It just did not feel right when I shot it.

That is my preference and I reccomend trying both before buying.

I own an early model P99 9mm Interarms import (98 manufacture date) and have also recently purchased a Springfield XD sub compact 9mm.

Each has its merits. The P99 is very ergonomic for me, fits my hand the best of any semi-auto I have held, and has been completely reliable. The XD fits my hand well, and has proven thus far to be both exceptionally accurate and reliable thus far.

From a range perspective, I shoot either gun equally well. The trigger for each is probably a shooter preference. The early P99 is essentially an ‘AS’ model while the XD has a consistent SA pull for the shooter. No double strike capability though without cycling the slide slightly. I am as accurate with the XD as the P99 which probably gives the nod to the XD as it has the shorter barrel and is smaller. However, as a subjective observation, I think the XD has a bit more muzzle flip (not suprisingly) and is not on target quite as quickly. Definitely a bit of apples and oranges since I don’t have the P99C and my P99 also has the ‘AS’ trigger system.

I can’t provide any negatives for either as they both have performed perfectly for me. I suppose, the biggest question would be that if I didn’t own either of these two currently but had my past experience shooting both, what would my buying decision be today and where would I spend my money? I believe I would have to give the nod to the XD on pure dollars. I don’t think one would go wrong with either though.
