I own a P99 AC in .40S&W. I love the gun and find the .40S&W to be quite managable. I'm going to be adding a P99 Compact and am considering a 9mm and the .40. While the .40 in the full size isn't at all an issue, I'm concerned about the Compact in that caliber. Is the recoil and flip of the .40 an issue with the Compact? I know that this is all subjective, but some guns in some calibers do better than others as compacts. I should add that there is about a zero chance of shooting each before the purchase.

This comes up a lot. If U do a search of past messages on this topic at handgunforum.net , glocktalk and Sigforum - U will find this talked about before - At the Walther Forum - some 40 cal P99c owners have been disappointed in the amount of recoil.

I super love my 9mm P99c - but it is snappier than a Glock 26. I wouldn't want to shoot the gun in 40 cal.

I think that in any true compact gun, the .40 takes a while to get used to and some never do. If I were going to buy another compact it would probably be a 9mm although I love my 2075 Rami .40 and PT140MilPro.

Thank you gentlemen for the concise summary. That anwers my question and confirms my suspicions.

I have two experiences when it comes to sub compact guns. like the glock for example in the sc form is pretty bad recoil wise on a stock gun. now take my .40 xd sc and there is hardly a noticable difference between it and the service model. i really think that you should try to shoot them if possible, though the 9mm will have less flip with some practice you cand definetly manage the .40, plus as it is a defensive gun it isn't like you are gonna be shooting 1000's of rds through often so it shouldn't be an issue. but if you do plan to train and get good with it, and plan to shoot it alot then i would say go with the 9mm, plus the fact that 9mm is so much cheaper these days!

Well, as much as I prefer the P99c to the Glock 26 - it does have a lot of muzzle rise. The bore axis is a bit higher. Now, I shoot the P99c better. But it is a snappy little gun. I think it would be terrible in 40 cal.

Yesterday I ended up buying a P99C QA in 9mm. Lately P99c have been as rare as hen's teeth around here. Back late last year there were a bunch of them around in all variations and calibers, and then about a month or two ago they dried up. I've even seen less on the Net and never very many to begin with. I wanted to buy this gun in person if it was used, which this gun is (but mint), as it is meant for carry.

I actually had my choice between a new .40 caliber AS and the used but minty 9mm QA for $150 less. My full size P99 is an AS so AS was my first trigger choice, but the QA was a close second. I'm very used to the QA type trigger but it would have been nice to match my full size P99. The main decider was 9mm over .40. The trigger I could live with either way. Plus, saving $150 and still having a "like new" gun is the A Plan.

Another thing that I like about the QA is that it also has the decocker. I know that it really isn't meant to be used as one other than field stripping, but I still find is very useable. While I will carry the gun loaded and "cocked" (or, half-cocked?), I do like to have the ability to step the gun down to a de-cocked condition in various settings. Plus, it is very quick and simple to return the gun to firing condition with a dead minimal (1cm) retraction of the slide. In any event, the key is to keep you finger off the trigger unless you want to go bang. Some folks freak at the notion of a lack of a manual safety, but I just treat the gun as if I was carrying a revolver.

As to the trigger pull itself, it reminds me somewhat of one of my favorite triggers, the double action only trigger of the PT111, a trigger that I do very well with. If this was going to be a target gun I would consider otherwise, but I'm anticipating far more than acceptable accuracy for what the gun is meant for.

Walthers are addicting, this is my fourth (P99, P22, P1, P99C AQ). Next will be a Walther PP Super and then hopefully a P5. I'm working up to the P88!

Well, congrats.

The use of the decocker on the QA has been debated ad nasium on the Walther Forum. I still say it is a terrible idea. If something comes up where U must grab your gun, you may be lucky to even get it out and presented (like a parking lot robbery). In those cases, there is now ay U will be able to get it out AND cock the gun 2 handed to reactivate the firearm before it can fire.

Anyway - enjoy the P99c :)

Hey Shipwreck. Thanks.

I'm talking about using the decocker for setting the gun down for a bit, at the range, for example, not in any at-risk environment. If the gun isn't in my hands, or in my holster, I feel better about having it uncocked. Or, if I was to hand it over to someone who wanted to shoot it.

If there is anything in the whole wide world that bothers me about the Glock (and I have five of them) it's that there is no way to de-cock it. The only way is to pull the magazine and drop the chambered bullet down through the grip, a procedure that I never enjoy. The same with the Steyrs that I love. That's why when I get down to really deciding on my carry gun it will be between the P99c and the HK USP Compact (.40) and probably not my G36 or S9. Walther is pretty darn hard to beat. They are engineered for the way that I think, if that makes sense.

Here's my new P99C QA shown stock and with the Walther factory grip extender for 15 round magazines.

BTW, if you want Walther pinky rest floorplates buy them directly from WaltherUSA. I have seen sites with them for $10 each. Walther charges something like $2.50 each. I have seven on the way.

Storm good updates. I wasn't aware Walther made an extension like that. Let us know how it shoots when you get it out!

I just ordered a HK P2000SK variant 3 in a 9mm

The extensions are a relatively new item. The seller kuttlemuttel has them on ebay and has a web site with them. He's an excellent seller. He's selling them for $13 a pop. One other site has them but they are $30 each! They don't lock onto the magazine but the fit is tight enough that they don't slide too freely.

Enjoy the P2000SK. A buddy of mine just got one and he loves it. He's an HK .45 fanatic but that 9mm has given him food for thought. HKs are fine guns. I've shot them for years and right now have a full size and compact USP both in .40, variant one. Next I'll be looking at the HK45 later on this year. Oh to have the guns I've foolishly sold.

Not to side track your thread. I have a USPf 9 mm along with the USPc 40. I love both of them and that's why I stuck with HK for a subcompact. In the future (distant) I can see myself owning a few Walthers. I have visions of a full size .40 AS and a compact 9 mm AS in my gun safe in the distant future.

I'm trading in a M&P on the next HK.

I like it but I really like a gun that has a DA/SA trigger on it. The M&P is rather Glock like and I personally would rather have something else. Now I don't want to offend anyone here as any gun is a great gun.

My M&P has somewhat of a "gritty" trigger and I want to dump it. The M&P's are a dime a dozen and I've seen them new for as low as $420. I'm not worried about buying another in the future if I truly miss it.

p99c 0.40

I have been reading the comments on the p99c 0.40 and I have come to the conclusion that most don't have any personal experience with it. I have owned one now for about a year as my concealed carry. I have put about 1200 rounds through it now and absolutely love it. I do shoot about once or more a month and have gotten my grouping down to about 2" circle at about 25ft. I would say that would qualify as a very accurate gun. Recoil I find is very reasonable and I can get back on target very quickly. The sites are also adjustable and that has helped tighten the grouping. I put this against the glock 27 with finger extension and I would buy the Walther over the glock every time. The glock also has the trigger finger safety and it get biting my trigger finger every time I shot it. I would highly recommend the p99c 0.40 and I am eventually going for the p99c in 9mm as well.
