(PA) What if you find a full auto?

Just a hypothetical. I own a SAR-1, and I checked to make sure it was fully legal before I bought it. Don't worry, after the AWB ends I will put a bayonet lug on it. (Why? Because I can!)


If you slip up and accidently buy a weapon that is fully automatic, what should you do legally? Like buying an AK that turns out to have a full auto sear, or an AR15 with M16 parts in it? For that matter, a post ban with preban kit on it?

I've been told "once FA, always FA" is the policy of the BATFE, so I assume you couldn't just rip out the full auto components and install semi?

It hasn't happened to me or anyone I know, but I'd like to know what to do if it ever happens. Who legally should you turn in the weapon to?

Never take it out, never show it to anyone, never tell anyone, and secretly covet it. It would be placed somewhere that it would take days for anyone but me to find.

I don't know if I could buy an AR15 and not know it was full auto, but to play along, I would replace the full auto parts and just pretend like it never happened.
You menion something about "once full auto, always full auto" well, since you bought it illegally, I don't think that applies. Even if it did, I would rather get caught with a semi auto gun that ATF said was once full auto than get caught with an unregistered full auto.

Given the lack of trust that most of us feel about government, "Discretion is the better part of valor" in such instances. I'd be very, very quiet while I thought it over.

Be careful about discussing this kind of topic in an open forum - what you've said can come back to haunt you or others.

And if someone were to find himself in this hypothetical predicament, he might want to consider talking to a lawyer BEFORE admitting anything to the government.

If you find any illegal part of a weapon, you are legally responsible for its disposition. If you just throw it away, or hide it, or pass it on, you've just made yourself a felon, and Mongo The Massive Mutant is waiting to greet you in his cell...
