I recently came across an adapter for a Martini Henry that allows the use of a .45 long Colt cartridge in the Martini Henry breech. Unfortunately I did not win the auction. From the pics this adapter is machined to replicate the .577-450 MH cartridge case on the exterior, and machined on the interior to accept the .45 Colt cartridge. Upon ejection. the entire adapter and case cones out of the MH breech.
Unfortunately, I believe the .45 Colt bullet is of such a smaller diameter that it does not engage the MH rifling. I have read that to remedy the situation, bullets made from the Lee R.E.A.L. .464 bullet mold can be used in the long Colt case, although they dont come close to approximating a MH round.

Which brings a thought to mind. Is it possible to paper wrapped a common .45 long Colt bullet enough such that it can be loaded into a long Colt case and engage the MH rifling?
I realize, if I acquire a MH .577-450, I should just bite the bullet and get the proper mold , dies, Magtech brass cartidges. etc. to do it right. I am just wondering about the stopgap measure of using the adapter with semi properly sized paper wrapped bullets to engage the MH rifling in long Colt cartridges.

Well the adaptor has a .45 LC chamber, so the fired case isn't going to expand enough to allow the seating of a significantly larger diameter bullet, paper-patched or not. Also, unless the adaptor is machined to fit your rifle's chamber the chances are it will be more trouble than it is worth as there is quite a variance in .577/.450 chamber dimensions.
The M-H does best with a bullet diameter of .468" to .471" & some people paper-patch standard .458" bullets to that size though grease groove bullet molds of the larger sizes are now readily available.
