So I'm trying to buy a new SP101. Got one Saturday. Good deal, just what I've been looking for, yada yada.
I planned half a day off work today to go get the permit, then go get the gun, and then out to the range.
First, I drive up north to the county courthouse. Fill out the form, which is an abbreviated version of the federal yellow form. Pay ten bucks, have my licence run, and get the permit signed by a deputy. (Yup, I not only have to ask for permission to buy a gun, but I also have to pay for it!)
Then I drive back down south to the transfering gun store. ( I bought the gun in Kansas, live in MO, so it has to be transferred.) I get there and fill out the Federal Yellow Form, with the same questions I just answered an hour ago. Turns out, the store hasn't got the transfers yet, will be in tomorrow. So I'll go back tomorrow on lunch to get the gun. (No big deal, I'll just spend the rest of my half-day off loading up some more rounds for it.) That's when I'll get to do NICS. Just in case I rob a bank or something on the way home apparently, since I've already passed two of the same background checks...sigh.
So, my rant/question is why do I have to fill out 2 nearly identical forms and have my Driver's licence/social security number run twice? And why does trans-state line sales still need to be transfered if the dealer has to call the freaking feds to get permission to give me the gun?!?! If I'm wanted by the feds, does it really matter if I'm in MO, KS, OK, AR or where ever?
This is rhetorical, by the way. I know why I have to do all this hoop jumping, and I know that in some States this stuff is WAY worse. (And yes, I DO believe that all this info on me is being kept by the various gov't offices involved.) I'm just venting off some steam before I go lock myself away in the Reloading Room...
