A Fourth of July picnic in the park is interrupted by the type of fireworks you don't want to see. Police say a man walked up and apparently shot his ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself. It happened at Overton Park around five in the afternoon.
Several families were in Overton Park at the time having cookouts including Jack Jackson. Jackson was just a few yards away when he heard gunshots. "I walked over there and I saw a man there lying on the ground with a gun next to him and I saw the lady on the other side gasping for air." We're told a man approached his ex-girlfriend, shot her in the head, then shot himself in the chest, in broad daylight, near dozens of small children. Jackson says this Independence Day he has much to celebrate, because no one in his family was hurt. "It could've been one of my kids, one of them could've got shot."
Family members tell us the gunman has a history of domestic violence. The shooting victim's son tells us the gunman has even pulled a knife on him. At last check both are recovering at the Med - One in critical, the other in extreme critical.
Investigators wouldn't confirm this, but sources tell us the shooting victim did have a restraining order against the gunman.
Hopefully the woman recovers. But, as a stark reminder for those against carry in parks and similar laws, here we have someone with a history of domestic violence with a gun, a restraining order (very useful), and taking a gun into the park. Never mind the whole attempted murder or possible murder thing, but, I'm just surprised a criminal would break so many fine laws all at the same time. Sadly, she didn't have much of a chance to defend herself. :banghead:
