A Fourth of July picnic in the park is interrupted by the type of fireworks you don't want to see. Police say a man walked up and apparently shot his ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself. It happened at Overton Park around five in the afternoon.

Several families were in Overton Park at the time having cookouts including Jack Jackson. Jackson was just a few yards away when he heard gunshots. "I walked over there and I saw a man there lying on the ground with a gun next to him and I saw the lady on the other side gasping for air." We're told a man approached his ex-girlfriend, shot her in the head, then shot himself in the chest, in broad daylight, near dozens of small children. Jackson says this Independence Day he has much to celebrate, because no one in his family was hurt. "It could've been one of my kids, one of them could've got shot."

Family members tell us the gunman has a history of domestic violence. The shooting victim's son tells us the gunman has even pulled a knife on him. At last check both are recovering at the Med - One in critical, the other in extreme critical.

Investigators wouldn't confirm this, but sources tell us the shooting victim did have a restraining order against the gunman.

Hopefully the woman recovers. But, as a stark reminder for those against carry in parks and similar laws, here we have someone with a history of domestic violence with a gun, a restraining order (very useful), and taking a gun into the park. Never mind the whole attempted murder or possible murder thing, but, I'm just surprised a criminal would break so many fine laws all at the same time. Sadly, she didn't have much of a chance to defend herself. :(:banghead:

Don't think that it'd help our cause any. Those on the other side of the fence will just say "If we didn't have the laws we do then this would be happening much more!"

IMHO, those should come with a CCW permit, may not have helped in this particular situation, but ......

If I recall correctly, even licensed individuals are are forbidden to carry in parks in Tennessee.

Oh. One of those high-powered life-saving restraining orders leftist extremists believe are good enough for commoners.

+digits to that. They should start adding an organ donor box on those things...for pete's sake.

A qualified AMEN to that.

The qualification being that if the woman had used the brains God provided her with and been willing to have the assault/attempted murder prosecuted when the guy pulled the knife on her he'd likely have not been in the position to do anything to her again.

I am a woman and, as such, I sometimes wonder if my fellow females have anything but cotton candy between their ears when it comes to this sort of thing.

I have infinite sympathy for any victim of domestic violence the first time it happens. My sympathy diminishes rapidly with each repeated occurrence and reaches zero if a deadly weapon appears and a criminal prosecution does not.

Enabling violence by "forgiving" the perpetrator rather than prosecuting him/her* is, in my eyes, at least as reprehensible as enabling alcohol or drug abuse. :(

*Guys get abused too.

The gungrabbers will see this incident as proof positive that they must ban all guns. Obviously (to them), if they can stop everyone from having guns, this never would have happened.

Yeah...right!

i see it as proof that our existing laws are not being enforced. From what i recall if you have been convicted of domestic violence you should not even be in possesion of a firearm. So i believe this goes back to the last domestic violence and restraining order she had. That looks like was never carried out. Nor did the authorites make sure that he understood that it was unlawfull for him to be in possesion of a firearm. Now if he borrowed a firearm then that person is also responsible. So lets say he is a gun owner or was. He lost those rights with a restraining order and domestic violence. the laws are already in place. There are enough laws against guns. lets see that they are enforced. so instead of blaming gun owners. I am blaiming law enforcement. So he is taking responsibility on the side of law enforcement. if i were the family i would be seeking an attorney to press charges against the city for not enforcing the laws it supposed to enforce.
NOT THE GUN COMPANY THAT SOLD THE GUN
