Parking lot strategies??

For those who say parking closer is safer. I was approached at Home Depot with a crowded parking lot and my car was parked on the very front row. Being alert was the only thing that saved me frome being mugged or carjacked.

Doesn't matter if you are parked up close or far away, you have to be aware of your surounds at all times.

At least make sure you are in a well lite area.

One thing I have learned is to "Stand Tall" an old military term for carrying your self well and projecting a formable image to those around you.

Don't "look" like a pushover! Make them think twice about approaching you by carrying yourself in a military manner and look sharp and intimidating. It may or may not have the same effect on every individual.

As an added plus the whole world will think more of you. Somewhat of reverse profiling that will get you respect.

That is all $.02 worth.

I was in a local theatre just last week with my wife. While returning to our car after the movie, there was a young man loitering and walking around cars. It appeared his car was parked directly behind mine, with the drivers door opened. No one was in the drivers seat, but there was another male in the passenger seat.

I had my wife walk behind me as I spotted the situation several rows early on approach. I made solid eye contact with the lad and made sure I projected to him in a non verbal way that not only is 6'4, and 240lbs aware of his presence, I might have a little something more. I continued to survey the area for other possible perps.

He moved out of my way and towards his car avoiding eye contact with me as I was within 20 feet. I maintained eye contact as I circled in front of my car (for cover) and there was no incident. It sure felt strange though and as others have posted, I wanted to make sure they knew that I/we were not good targets.

I was carrying btw.

Over the past summer I spent a good amount of time living with my girlfriend at her home in Baltimore City. Like much of the city, her upper class golf course neighborhood is surrounded by lawless ghettos that make Mogadishu look like San Fransisco. Upon returning late at night from a lovely evening at a seafood restaurant in the inner harbor with another friend, accompanied by his girlfriend (who also happens to be a member) we were faced with a serious situation. Long story short she had left her purse with her house keys at the restaurant and returned to the restaurant with my friends girlfriend to retrieve it, leaving us men waiting back at my car enjoying conversation over a smoke. Suddenly, a juvenile egressed from the shadows and asked us if we had a lighter then preceded to request the keys to my Porsche convertible after brandishing a knife. My lead injection device being carried in a ankle holster I knew I could not make a clean draw with out being attacked. I quickly disarmed the suspect with a outward swoop spinning him around arm behind his back and kicking out his knees forcing him to the ground as I tossed my friend my keys to retrieve my cell from my trunk and call the police. As he opened the trunk the perps buddies began to open semi automatic fire from behind a ford fiesta parked down the street. I quickly cuffed the perp in custody, took out my trusty FN FiveseveN and took cover behind my own car opening the passenger door crawling through to the trunk to retrieve my body armor as well as my trunk gun that I throw my friend(AR-4 with the short barrell, 18 point tactical sling, ACOG with an JPOINT backup, a 4 sided rail with a surefire on one side, laser sight on the other, and a vertical fore grip, I have dubbed "Monkey") as well as a smoke canister I keep back there in case I ever need a signal device for a roadside emergency. As inaccurately fired Glock thrown lead whizzed over our heads my friend yelled "It is an honor to die at your side" as he popped the smoker canister to which I responded "It is an honor to have lived at yours." My friend then charged the Fiesta as I provided cover fire with my 57, all I could see as he disappeared into the smoke was the flash of my AR4 as it spit fire into the night. At his signal I moved forward using a bounding over watch under his cover to a tree. Suddenly, the night grew deathly quiet. As the smoke cleared I saw my friend standing on top of the Fiesta assault vehicle with the additional two perps holding their hands in the air in surrender just as police reinforcements arrived . Turns out these guys were cocaine traffickers and wanted my car to run drugs. Our girlfriends returned some time later.

When I was still in grade school my mother was abducted from a suburban mall parking lot, so personal safety in a parking lot is something for me that hits home. And something that I have been thinking about for the 25+ years since. Combine that with plenty of practice from living in high crime areas (Philadelphia/Baltimore/Washington DC, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami/Ft Lauderdale), and I think my tactics have evolved to be pretty solid.

Actual location in the parking lot is most often of little consequence (unless you stick to parking in darkened, concealed areas, where dangers seem to abound) but here are a few tactics that can be of help:

1) Park rear in nose out: This puts you in the best position to get out of dodge quickly in an emergency. Plus, when approached from the normal lanes of travel, you can open the door towards the most likely threat axis-that allows you to keep the door between you and the bad guys, giving you time to start the engine and throw it into gear and begin escaping. Who cares if the door isn't shut, or you bash the door on other cars as you pull out...break contact and clear the area. (Many people on this forum talk about shooting an intruder into their home-something that never is a factor in that plan or decision is bullet holes in walls and blood stains on the floor. Like those things, possible auto body repairs shouldn't be a factor where your safety is concerned.) Thinking defensively as you go into a parking lot can be a big help (I drove emergency response vehicles for a long time, so this was drilled into me: park so that you can leave as quickly as possible).

2) Take an indirect route to your vehicle: this means that anyone who might be following you now has to cut across parked cars, etc, just like you have done, moving in an unnatural pattern and giving away their intentions early. If need be, make your way back into the store you have just come out of, you are safe there.

3) Keys out and in your hand, eyes up and scanning as you are walking: be aware of your surroundings. Being alert and aware makes you look less vulnerable and less of a target. Having your keys out and the car key in your hand means you can keep your head up when your reach your vehicle and be aware of anyone approaching at this vulnerable time. Plus it gets you into the vehicle quicker, reducing your time where you are stopped and vulnerable.

If the situation deteriorates:
a) Run: but not to the car, drop the bags you are carrying, head whereever you think safety is...escape fast. Nothing you have in the bags is worth what might happen to you.
b) Open area confrontation: turn and very loudly and publicly scream: "Why are you following me !?!" Now you are making the situation very public and attracting attention, at worst you look like an a$$ or some kind of nut....but you may startle someone who is stalking you enough to force their hand-and hopefully get them to split-since they have now been made.
c) Flip the Situation: as a last resort, look for a big van, truck, suv you can turn the corner of and be hidden from their view. Turn that corner and be out of sight, drop you bags, turn and be ready to attack with full fury anyone who turns that corner behind you. The best defense sometimes is a good offense, let the battle be on your terms-seize the initiative.

Being aware of your surroundings and not looking like a target is one of the best ways I have found to stay safe, even in an unsafe place. But that means putting distractions out of your mind, and possibly even out of your hands...and using your best weapon, your brain above all others-100% of the time.

Danger seems to come when you least expect it.........

In respect of my car I almost always try to park away from other cars even if I need do some walking. But am I putting myself in additional danger by being distant from the store(s) and other parked cars?

I don't think so. I like to park as far as possible to avoid the cell-phone-dazed, minivan-phased, Prozac-crazed mega-moms. I think the best defense is awareness. Don't let anyone sneak up on you. Keep your hand on your carry piece at all times while walking. Have your keys ready to enter the car quickly. Lock the doors once inside the car. Remember, your head should be like an owl... you must be aware of what is surrounding you in all directions at all times. That is the best defense.

I'm another one that parks in the boonies. The fewer the cars, the better since there will be fewer places to hide.

I don't agree with more customers (sheep) being better for you. How often do we hear about attacks where witnesses did absolutely nothing but watched someone get robbed, beaten, stabbed, and/or shot?

Parking lots are a good reason to carry in a coat pocket - *this* is what a Airweight J-frame is perfect for.
