i went to the range today and forgot that they close early on sunday. someone parked his pickup truck and looked at me come back to my car. he then got back in his pickup truck and drove away. i circled around the building and he was gone. his constant mischievous smile and moving back an forth had me thinking.

i feel that he was probably scoping me out as a easy target to steal guns from. anyone have similar story or advice.

he gave me this look like he recognized me and almost wanted to walk over. i know for a fact that we don't know each other. and he never stopped smiling weirdly once.

Maybe he had arranged to meet his internet lover for the first time and they selected the range parking lot on a Sunday thinking no one else would show up with it being closed and all. His smile may just have been thinking that you were even more dashing in person than your pictures had led him to believe.

I would say he was scoping you out but the smile lends me to believe Jorg's theory.

Dunno. You made it home safe so I suppose all is well.

The only thing that really stinks is that one of the only times I'm ever unarmed is when heading into the range. No loaded guns at my range.

paranoid thoughts perhaps.

The guy has bad eyes and thought you were someone he knew and had a broken jaw years ago which cause his smile to look mischievous to the untrained observer.

Or perhaps it was all a plot to distract you as his homeboys snuck up and stole the rims off your super fly hot rod :scrutiny:

It is best not to let a situational awareness get the best of us.

I work at night in a convenience store. If I posted a thread about every kook that did something odd in the parking lot while wearing a wierd look on his face...If I worried about every kook that did something odd in the parking lot with a wierd look on his face...and if I asked for advice (?) about all of these fellows, and there are a lot of them...

My question is , how is it that YOU keep ending up in these situations? You've got weirdos coming on to you at the range, it seems as though there's a burglar or an armed robbery in your restaurant every week or so.

***? what up dude?

Could have been me you saw. I've sometimes gone to an indoor range on a day it was closed, noticed that someone else had made the same mistake, and smiled at him. I've even smiled at people in the parking lot when the range wasn't closed.

But if you're that frightened why not just throw your money on the ground and drive away fast without looking back. Every dollar helps in this time of rising gas prices.

It happens, both at remote shooting spots and in a case by my hose were 2 people were releived of their guns at gunpoit while walking out. Be aware and ready in the parking lot.

As for meeting someone for a date in the range parking lot, I caught a couple doing that as well!:) It was late at night, they didn't realize a class was going to let out at a certain time.

Vehicle prowls outside gun ranges aren't commonplace here, but they do happen. Last summer, someone broke into the gunsmith's car at the local indoor range looking for guns. Thankfully, he kept no firearms in his car, but other items were taken.

It happens. Oddly enough, gun ranges aren't safe havens. My guess is this was absolutely nothing, but this lends credit to not leaving anything of value or in plain sight in your car at the range, or anywhere else. A stashed gun while you 'run inside real quick' can be found, no matter how good you think your spot is. Prowlers have thought of every location to find a gun, just as much as you've thought of every location to hide one.

Perhaps I'm missing something.....you thought you may be "easy target to steal guns from", but why?? You took your guns with you when you went into the range (or tried to), so there were no guns in your car to steal.

I'm sure that he wasn't going to rob you since gun range parking lot is not the best place to rob people since it's not a liberal college campus where no one is armed.

I think you may be reading into it too much...I don't think that anyone with any common sense will try to steal something out of someone who frequents a gun range.

the guy parked his truck and got out. he couldn't make his mind up whether to get back in his truck. he was moving back and forth with the door open. he eventually drove away. this all happened in maybe 30 seconds. i don't think he was there for a date. also the range had just closed. there was another customer parked on my other side. maybe, he knew me because i know friends of the owner, etc, and just wanted to say hello. yet, he did look like he was going to confront me.

lately, this city has been going through crime. the family dollar next door got robbed three times, twice in one week. the subway down the street got robbed. the animal clinic behind our other location got burglarized. the convenience store next door got robbed. my friends restaurant got burglarized along with 11 other businesses on the same night. i've heard of 3 banks getting robbed. all of this within the last year. also, a cop two weeks ago had to kill a bank robber on the outskirts of town. i don't want to speculate why we have these problems. i just remembered some other stories. all you have to do is watch the crime stoppers webpage which i do on occassion. i'm not going to mention evey incident because it's just too much to read. just to let you know that the city i'm in has been or is just now going through alot of crime. i found out that 3 of my ex employees were ex drug dealers. another's family is in prison for retaliation of a killing. there's alot of criminals and gang members in our city. but who doesn't have these problems. you just have to look to the media.

people have a tendency to think that i'm an easy target because the way i look. i'm shorter than the average person, look naive, unathletic, etc.
until they notice that i spot them with a concerned look.

That's my weapon of choice...

the concerned look has no doubt saved my bacon more than once. It lets everyone know I have taken their presence into consideration and have given thought to my situation. This alone ends 99.999% of my interactions with strangers daily.

For some reason also, maybe zoning, indoor ranges can be in kind of out of the way industrial parks and/or in bad areas. One is in Inglewood CA for anyone familiar with that town.

A cop I met swears that he ended up shooting next to someone he had arrested! The range in Compton CA got closed last year.

Maybe he just wanted to ask you if you knew the range hours, until you frightened him away with your steely glare.

i saw him as i was walking back to my car. so he should have known that i already knew they're closed. also, i'm too self conscious and polite to give people a mean look. i had a worried look. i am too worried about offending someone sometimes that i think i'd put myself in danger. if i saw a shady character walk inside an elevator. i hope that i would be able to act like i forgot something and take the stairs.

he was kinda of dramatic in his facial expression. the best way to describe his facial expression is a big grin. they say that bad guys give themselves away by body language. it's counterintuitive. but i've seen it happen.

i was just thinking. maybe, he wanted to ask about my car. i was in a miata convertible. there's just too many scenarios.

Yeah, and the OP was in a convertible Miata. The gaydar is painting quite a strong return with this one, thweetie. :uhoh:

He's giving you a dramatic big grin, you're driving a mazda miata...

I think maybe he was interested in you, if you know what I mean.

The two perps that were in the famous FBI Miami shootout in 1986 had shot someone at an informal outdoor shooting spot and relieved the guy of his weapons and car.
