This is my first AR, so be patient with me. I would like to do an AR build around a match barrel, most likely an Olympic Arms 16 in SS ultramatch. With that goal in mind is there a parts supplier that would put together parts kit for me MINUS the barrel? Am I pretty much stuck with purchasing every single little upper receiver part separately?

nah go to bravo company and get your self a complete upper receiver. with that said olympic will sell you a complete upper with the barrel you want installed.if you decide to build your own upper receiver check out White Oak Armaments barrels nouthing wrong with an oylmpic barrel i just don't care for the 1/9 twist,oh yea if you build remember to get your bolt carrier group from bravo company also BCM makes top tier parts!

You can get Model1 and Del Ton to build a kit less barrel, but you will need the tools and simple skills to instal the barrel. Not hard to do, and I have swapped or built up about 10 uppers and barrels.

If your going to build i'd rather pick and choose every single part anyways! It's an awesome feeling when a rifle you assembled from hand picked parts and tuned works well.

Yes, but where is the fun in that (buying the complete upper)? Thanks for the White Oak tip, their SPR barrel (with headspaced bolt) looks like the ticket.

That's what I had in mind. A very good barrel with free float handguard, then go cheap milspec with the rest of the package.

If I knew what I was doing, I'd do just that. Right now selecting every single part separately is a bit overwhelming. Why I was asking about a kit...

don't buy c-rap parts... IMO buy a RRA LPK 2stage NM, and a good lower... I like stag, but there are many other good ones.... then buy the parts for the upper, I would pay someone to assemble the upper, it's easy enough to do, but you need an armorers wrench, go, no-go gages, and a upper bloc, these will run you over $100 (which is more than it costs to have one built) and you need a torque wrench

you can call Armalite directly to buy parts (no discount) but in my experience, they will take the time to set you up with the right parts,

you can build the lower NP in under an hour, after a few you will be building them in 15 minutes

*****edit*****

forgot, I have armalite's number in speed dial

+1 on Bravo company, I'd skip the olympic arms. I'm not trying to run down a company, but Oly just isn't in the same league quality wise as many comparably priced competitors.

yes, Oliy is sort of hit n miss, I like (but can't afford) white oak and kreiger... the armalite match stuff is very nice too

I don't know if this is against the rules but M1S is ...... lets' just say I would not own anything m1sales branded... delthon is ehhh, bravo company... well ok... but think about this... for the parts other than the but-stock and barrel and and hand guard (free floater tube... right?) the difference in price from M1S and armalite, bushmaster, colt..etc is only about $100-$200.... for a rifle you are going to own for the rest off your life.... do it right

RUSSKITEXAN by complete upper reciver i ment the reciver its self has been assembled :foward assist/dust cover/sorry i didn't clarify that. you will still have to install your barrel of choice. its funny you like the SPR BAREL i ordered one monday i'll post some pics when it comes in (should be here friday)

I think you fing that Del-Ton is better than ehhh, and Bravo Company deserves much better than an OK. I would definitely go that route as opposed to Oly. Arms. Its your call, but your first build should be a good one.

This + the lower of your choice: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=22&t=382832

Just pull the barrel and slide yours in.
If I may ask, whats so special about that barrel? Do you allready have it?
Nothing special. The barrel is where the accuracy is at. I'm interested in optimizing accuracy at the cost of other parts, all subject to cost, of course. I can see myself spending 300 on the barrel, while I won't be inclined to spend nearly as much on the upper/BCG, if that makes sense... I.e My priorities are accuracy and cost. Havn't got the barrel yet. Like the look of that White Oak SPR...

Look at the RRA Varmit uppers in stainless. If it's to heavy you can get it fluted. The Varmit uppers are nats ass tack drivers.
If you are looking to do DCM type of shooting Bushmaster has a nice HB barrel that works well.
