I 've been meaning to get this up since 4th of July weekend. I hung out with two cops from 2 different MA cities over the weekend and these are my observations.

Cop #1. Cool guy. Fuill sleeve tattoos. Rode up on a Harly. Would only have 1 drink because he was riding. Carries a Barretta on duty. (Did not know model or caliber.) Does not carry off duty and doesn't see any reason to. Does not shoot recreationally and does not own any other guns.

Cop#2. Married and with wife. Former military. Drank plenty because his wife was driving. Good guy. Only knew his duty pistol was a S&W but did know what model. Does not shoot recreationally. Owns one gun but does not keep it loaded at home.(He does not have kids.) Does not carry off duty and thinks there is no reason to. Admitted if he lived in the city I live in he would probably carry. Pro 2nd. I think he was misinformed about what you can do at a gun show. He was under the impression that I can go to a NH gun show and buy any gun I want with or without a MA LTC. (I am 99.9% sure I cant. If I can I gotta go buy a XD40!)

Here's the best part....

Three people who were listening in on the conversation I was having with the LEOs are coming to the range with my wife and I this Sunday because they want to learn about guns. I can't wait!

If they are new shooters, make sure your bring or borrow and bring a .22 caliber of some kind - great way to start of newbies.

Took a refresher NRA saftey course recently and a mom came with her son to find out what guns were about because the boy was learnig how to shoot in boy scouts.

You had to see the smile on that woman's face as she learned how to shoot going from a 3 foot group at 25 yards down to a nice ragged hole 3 inches across.

Leave the 44 mags, 454 casull's and 500 magnums home!

I've got a couple of .22LR rifles for them to start on but as far as pistols the lightest recoiling guns I have are .38. Maybe I will save pistols for another day. If they feel good trying some heavier recoiling rifles I will offer them the option of shooting the .38. I tried to start my wife on the 9mm and that was a very bad idea.

I'd start with the rifles first. Less scary and intimidating. Depending on how they do, bring out the .38's, but make sure you have some light loads in there.

Good luck!

You can buy long guns in NH, but handguns have to be transferred to a MA FFL. (Most will not even do that anymore b/c of the whole 10/98 MA compliance regs.)

Chipperman & lynn ma guy

Thought I'd say HI...I'm a new member here, been lurking for several months. I'm on North Shore also. I have a Class A ALP and carry 23/7 (gotta shower sometime). Look forward to discussing local issues with you guys in the future. My business takes me in many politically correct settings which has forced me to a summer carry of a .32 Seecamp in a "wallet" front pocket holster. (Mass folks understand our limited choices on the compliant list)

I'm a southern transplant from 20+ yrs ago...grew up in LEO family with family farm of 1,000 acres....my first gun at age 12 was a Savage 22LR over .410 - if you misssed the squirrel with the bullet you got him with the shotgun.

Much different environment here in the land of Fat Ted.

To stay on thread, the few LEO's I know rarely shoot recreationally - only shoot annually to qualify. I come in contact with many LEOs, but choose not to discuss firearms, so as not to draw attention to self...hard to understand the prevailing wind of CCW opinion around here.

Isn't it sad that the only new semi-auto pocket pistols available in MA are Seacamps with extra heavy triggers. Not that they aren't great pistols but a choice would be nice! (Not to mention they ain't cheap!)

Welcome aut2no!

Joined the Seecamp club myself. :D
I carry that when I can't carry my P7M8.

The LEO's I shoot with are all very serious shooters, and in favor of CCW. Unfotunately there are too many that are not either of the above. :banghead:

Yeah, the "Seecamp Club" is expensive. The 'insult upon injury' is that after $575 w/ 1 clip (California edition), you can only use WW silvertips around $23/box.

At the range, it's humbling to look at your groups from a pocket gun w/ no sights and a grip w/ only my middle finger around it - ring & pinkie fingers below the mag. I just bot it & have around 300 rds - only an occasional stovepipe on last rd. - which is supposedly common.

IMO, an extremely high quality tool for very up close and personal defense,

Sorry to temporarily hijack the thread, but i was curious- why are Seecamps only to be used with Winchester Silvertips?

"Sorry to temporarily hijack the thread, but i was curious- why are Seecamps only to be used with Winchester Silvertips?"

A quick & cursory answer since others are more qualified than I.

Larry Seecamp designed the pistol around the Silvertip itself being the most effective .32ACP round - at least at the time of design. It is shorter than other .32 ammo choices and only has a 60 gr lead.

A search under "seecamp" on any forum will give you a nite of reading.

BTW, my next step up (situation allowing) is a S&W 642 38Special +P – Winchester 158gr LSWCHP +P

Good work with the newbes. One other suggestion, keep the target close even with a rifle, 5-7yds to start so they can see the hits and stay on the paper. Initial success is very important so they can get confident and like what they are doing.

Welcome to THR, auto2no!

A seecamp is sort of on my short list too. I need a pocket pistol. :)
