I got done with a conference early today, so I stopped by my LGS to say howdy and look around.

The store is a real mom and pop, and I'll be honest it seems to be slowly dying on the vine. Most long guns were consignments, with a few new semi auto rifles sprinkled in. The owner said things are slow, and I felt it just by his demeanor.

The owner had a bunch of newly consigned guns, some Beretta 92f's, two broomhandle Mausers (one with a stock) and other sundry semis.

I like big bore revolvers, and almost always buy good S&Ws when they are out on display. Not this time... for the first time in a long time! I must be reaching saturation, or getting to the point where I will just be filling the few remaining holes in the old "I have always wanted one of those" part of my psyche.

I walked away from the following that were decently priced and well maintained (with no hesitation or regrets) : a 6" pre lock S&W Model 27 that looked very, very clean, a nearly new 3" S&W 640 in .357, and a huge S&W.460 x-frame with the loooong barrel. He also had a spotless set of .44 and .454 Super Redhawks, a .41 Redhawk hunter, and a massive BFR in .45/70 (THAT was a cannon!)

These were all from one seller who clearly has the same revolver bug I do. It was really nice stuff, but nothing that leapt out at me... this time.

That is how life is. At some point, you gotta know when to say when! I have a few I'd like to have but there are very few I couldn't live without. I don't get in to the gun shops very often and I don't get to the range often enough either !

Sounds like me!

All my revolvers are the latest models,i'm thinking about buy three or four used model big bore handguns and calling it enough is enough.

Hurts me too to walk by sweet revolvers in the LGS. But, while the collection I have now is not extremely large, it is sufficient for what I need for now. Any more would just mean something else would have to go, or be unused. I'm really needin' a good SxS shotgun instead of another revolver.........;-)

So, where's the shop for those of us who like old smiths and old gun shops?

Corona, Ca. Annie's Get Your Gun ( Formerly Daves Guns).

Jerry and Anne have owned it for over a decade after buying the store from Dave. I really like going in an perusing the used stuff, and they have probably done 40-45 transfers or buys I made on GB during this time.

It's tough for a small guy to compete with the multi-outlet Turners Outdoorsman and ammo discounters like Wal Mart. Their prices reflect their buying power, and smaller guys are finding it tough to beat them.

I truly like these folks, they are both good people who give time to the new buyers and know their regulars. I hope they are able to keep rolling for many more decades.

Won't be mobile for another few weeks, but when I am I think I'll wander on down and look things over. Hopefully something might still be available. Old Smiths don't tend to sit around long.

The indy gun shops back in the day had a pretty good flow of pre-owned. With less around the pawn shops seem to be the ones. Either beaters or Glocks. Fowlers in Orange or Westminster turn up some but the prices aren't very wallet friendly.

After decades with only 2 LGS in our town, they sprung up like weeds during the Great Obama Panic of '08. Now all the little guys are closing down again and a mega chain moved in right across the street from one of the old timers. The other longtime shop in town is run by the owner who is now 83 and on an oxygen tank...apparently his kids don't want to take over the shop and are never around.
Soon we will be reduced to buying our guns online and transferring to the megastore.....ugh.
Good thing Arms list is around.....for now.....

I'm a sucker for contributing to my local economy. I came across 1972 vintage Colt Detective special with no holster wear nor rust and perfect grips. Haggled for 3 days till we agreed on a price I could live with, and they were happy to make the sale. Also my first snub nose and a fine shooter, I fondle it every chance I get.

I've been on the lookout for vintage .22cal rifles the past several years and have bought many from our local gun shows. The guys haggle with me, they make sales and stay in business and I'm having fun. I 've also met some nice guys who know me when they see me. I'm not rich by any means, but what I spend I do it local.

For those in the Seattle Area I'd recommend Pinto's Guns in Renton. Open Tuesday through Saturday- good selection of both new and used guns, often some very interesting used guns since they handle a lot of estates. Prices are average to good on new stuff but often very good on used stuff. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and the selection of used guns ranges from beaters to collector-grade antiques. Old-school feel, too, and their bargain bins of parts, holsters and belts are really worth pawing through now and again. Good selection of reloading supplies and components too- can't recommend them enough!

There are no big gun stores in Taos NM, my closet town. Walmart does not count since no one there can ever find the keys to the gun case. That is Taos all over. So, we have two small independents. Mike Gomez runs "Wild West Trading" and that is the place for new or used guns, saddles and packing gear. Genuinely nice guy who makes deals and loves to chat guns and outdoor stuff. Located south of Taos on the highway. Drop on in when in town.
