Hi all, I'm a forum newbie and have been poking around a little. I've had black powder pistols for thirty-some years and also have a 51 Navy conversion in 38 SPL. Recently, I've become interested in Patersons, even with their issues. I see where Uberti no longer makes one but Dixie Gun Works lists a Pietta replica. Can anyone speak for them? Are they even still available and is the Pietta decent enough?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve

while not owning one personally , I have shot two of them , one with loading lever one without lever .
I think they are built pretty nice , better than the standard inexpensive Piettas . The finish on both of my buddies were exceptional , and both guns were pretty smooth actioned too . I think Pietta takes a little more time putting these together , kinda like the LeMats and Old Silver Model revolvers .
I think price dictates that on all three models wev'e discussed now .
They are getting hard to find , don't think Dixie actualy stocks them anymore , but am sure they still list them on the website , but out of stock .
So , yes , they are decent enough for interest for sure , pretty well built too I would even say . I am sure they are out there too , just finding one is the question . They pretty much are must have if your a Reproduction collector of any sort . I have yet to collect one though , but I will eventually :D
Good luck , hope this helps , and let me know if you find someone that is currently stocking them pelase .

Sincerely, Das Jaeger

I have a Pietta with the separate loading lever. Great gun, though they're a pain to put back together the first time you try it. It's an accurate gun due to the longer barrel. The cylinder tends to jam from fouling quickly, but I use the vegetable spray PAM on the arbor and it just keeps on turning. I recommend it.
This is how it's loaded:

As pohill said fouling is the biggest problem with the Paterson revolvers, at least the replicas. Fouling builds up between the barrel and cylinder and starts dragging and a lot of fouling works it way to the arbor. I wipe mine down on every loading. I find that my Paterson's come apart easy and the loading tool is better than using the end of the arbor. Not something you would want to do while on horse back, not so bad at a table.

The 7.5 inch is a Replica Arms Inc, Marietta, Ohio model from 1964, serial number 33. Also marked MOFRA di Mainardi A. - Brescia. The 9 inch is the "Texas Paterson" from Pietta. Both are developing a nice plum color on some parts.

This is a counterfeit of unknown origin.

Thanks guys. I've seen the GB auction and it looks pretty nice. MadCrateBuilder, I've been eyeing your Patersons for a few weeks now! I'm lucky enough to live about 45 minutes from some incredible gun collections. The Phillips collection of Patersons at Woolaroc is a site to behold. One of these days the right replica will come along.

Pohill, Thanks for postin' the pic w/ the Paterson loading lever in place. I've never seen a Paterson (in my hand), and often wondered how the loading lever was attached for use. About the one on GB, for the trigger to be down with ther hammer in the at rest position, doesn't something have to be broken?

Good eye, sltm1. The spring that works the trigger looks like a mini-Walker mainspring (V-shaped). If you put it in wrong, it won't work correctly. I swear, there's two ways for alot of the Paterson parts to go back in, and one of those ways is wrong, even though it's a good fit. The falling trigger isn't a big deal - maybe the spring is weakened or broken, or, like I said, in wrong. You have to develop a taste for a Paterson, but once you do, it's a fun gun to shoot.
I'd make sure that gun on GB came with the separate loading lever - they can be a little pricey (and maybe hard to find).

I would love to see that. The Paterson really gets my heart rate up.

No. The trigger can be up or down regardless of hammer position. When the trigger is up and the hammer cocked that cause the trigger to drop into position.

Anyone seen the movie Barbarosa? Gary Busey's character carries a Paterson in the film.
