I want to order some brass from brassbombers.com but don't really make online purchases after getting screwed one time. I don't have any credit cards so would be using my debit card.

The site offers PayPal but says they will send all the info to PayPal for the transaction. I've never used PayPal before.

what do you guys usually do?

PayPal is an easy way for convenience, or to get screwed, in equal measure.

PayPal is NOT gun friendly.

Usually they want PayPal as the "gift" option, which skirts all of the requirements and all of your recourse of the PayPal system.

PayPal needs to be linked to a regulated financial instrument- Like a bank account. In doing so you give paypal authority to debit at any time- thats where I and my wife got screwed. Tread carefully.

If you plan on buying things online, get a credit card. A real credit card, with purchase refund protection, not a debit card. Very little can go wrong with a Visa/ MC depending on the issuing bank. Even if its only for use on the Internet., a credit card with REAL buyers protection( both for customer service issues, and fraud protection) is basically a must in this day and age.

I don't personally like paypal been burnt by them. You would need to give them your checking account info. I would read the procedures before even thinking about using them. But that's Just me.

what about the prepaid visa cards from walmart? say the item cost $55 just throw the $55 on there and order.

I have heard that certain things cant be done with those cards. I want to avoid the credit card thing if at all possible. got myself in enough problems in the past.

^^^ This!

The prepaid should work, but you'd likely have little recourse should something go wrong. The credit card companies have gone to bat for me multiple times over the years when things ordered were misrepresented.

I don't use a paypal account unless there is no other recourse, and I must have it and can't find it anywhere else. I have it go through a normal credit card and close/cancel the paypal account when done. My shooting club uses paypal for the annual membership dues :(

I think all of them offer some kind of protection, as the merchant account of the seller is tied to a bank. Debit cards offer about the same protection as a check - once they have your money, there is no protection at all.

As far as prepaid ones, I think they are basically a debit card.

There are the ones targeted to people with bad credit that are basically credit cards, and you prepay a certain amount that is held in an escrow account to guarantee the card. They are processed like a credit rather than debit card and MIGHT offer protection, but you really need to question them about it, as I'm sure it varies between them.

I cannot remember the last time I used my debit card. I have a real credit card that pays me rewards. I pay it off every 2 weeks so I don't carry a balance.

my main concern isn't losing the $50 for the purchase its losing the money in my bank and savings account. not saying brassbombers is going to do this but myself and my brother have ordered from places and either had it not ship and money was taken or they decided to take a little extra.

I signed up for a magazine online and it decided it didn't like my $20 order so it tacked on 2-3 more. I said why in the hell would I order 2-3 of the same thing. they wouldn't refund it.

Both of these are easily remedied with basic credit card protection.

I do not like credit cards. I used to be a points collector and had my Cabelas Visa number stolen a number of years ago. It took a few months to separate out the $11,000 in fraudulent charges. Also no one could explain how the crooks managed to change my billing address on the account. I kept wondering where my bill was. They issued me a new Cabelas card first thing even before we worked through the charges.

A year later, my "new" Cabelas card was still sitting in the home safe and a Cabelas bill shows up with one charge of $200. I called and explained the card had never been used and had never been in my wallet - how could this happen? I canceled the card rendering my $20+ value of Cabelas points void.

My wife and I do have one credit card that we both share the same number through our credit union. We monitor the account pretty much every day. That is the card that I use for online transactions.

However, I think you have almost the same protections with a debit card as with a credit card. I have been told that is now the case. Perhaps that was not true years ago.

Like a financial councilor of mine Dave Ramsey has always said that no one ever became a millionaire by collecting airline miles or any points. They did it by spending less than they earn and ignoring all the stuff the neighbors have purchased.

The brass place looks legit- I would carefully use my debit card.

Edit - PS. I love reloading and I had to put myself on a budget. I do not allow myself to purchase any 2nd Ammendment items without having the cash in the "gun fund". Handloading is like a disease..... Granted a fun one to have.

well looks like its time to get a credit card.

Welcome to the 21st century. It gets everyone eventually !

As a retailer in a brick and mortar LGS, I have my own particular disdain for e-commerce, but its just reality. Fighting that gets you padded rooms !

Be safe on the internet !

Never had any issue with Paypal...

You have to OK any transaction before your account is debited, or your card is charged...

I have no idea how their stand on 2A will affect your transaction for brass, but if the company selling the brass takes Paypal as payment, they must not be worried about getting paid...

I have never had an issue with using paypal. I purchase things on Ebay using it. I send payments or funds to other people using it. It is like any other form of payment, when not doing a in person transaction, you have to be cautious about the transaction prior sending funds. You can pay for brass with Paypal. You can buy gun parts, magazines etc with Paypal. Some merchants even take it for guns.

I am also a big fan of credit cards. Get a no annual fee card with a rebate or bonus points. Pay off the balance every month so you basically get a free 30 day loan and along with that you get points or cash back depending on the card. They pay you to use it. Also every card I have has 100% fraud protection. If the card is compromised I tell them what charges are mine and which ones aren't. They move legit stuff to a new card I sign an affidavit and the rest goes away. Over the years is has happened to me 2-3 times and each time I was out ZERO money and back up and running within 48- 72 hours.

I never use debt cards. I worked in a bank for over 4 years and fraud on a debt card is the worst thing that can happen to you because it removes your money from your account. There is fraud protection but it will take you some time to get you $$$ back and depending on your cash flow this could cause a lot of problems with other bills. I have seen it happen time and time again but none of those are concerns with a credit card. I only use a debit card as an ATM card to get cash when needed otherwise everything goes on a credit card and its paid off every month.

Ive had paypal since practically the day they started. I dont care if they are gun friendly or not. They dont have any problem with bullets , brass, parts and the like.

what do you guys usually do?

Having twice been the victim of fraud, I avoid PayPal to the maximum practicable extent.

If you must use PayPal to complete a transaction, and you can use a credit card for that transaction, do that. That's probably an expensive option for the merchant but that's their problem, not yours.

Never, ever link a PayPal account to a bank account. Just don't do it.

I use debit cards. Notice the "s" on the end.;) One is the main one I do not use other than to deposit money into as I can and use at ATM machines. The other two are a "trusted" account (Phone and electric, etc.) and the other is for internet purchases. Both are locked down to NO overdraft. I just transfer the amount I want to spend into the account I want to use, then buy/pay. Nothing extra in it other that about $ 10.00 to keep the internet account open. This has worked well for me in the past. I gave up on credit cards when I decided I could never spend beyond my means and get ahead in life about 40 years ago. YMMV

I was recently double charged for a single item (knife) I ordered online. I can't get the company to answer anything, emails, phone calls, nothing. I ordered with a debit card, and I do not know anything I can do to get the charge off, but I haven't experienced this before either. And to boot, they didn't send the knife with the correct blade.

I used paypal for years with no problems. Then I started getting unauthorized paypal withdrawals from my bank account for things like "Hand Creme from Nigeria" or "Israeli Calculators."

Paypal was always 100% good about removing the charges, no questions asked, but they were never able to stop it from continuing to happen.

The whole thing became tedious and time-consuming and worrisome so I shut down my paypal account and have never missed it.

I don’t remember what online site I was on at the time, but while creating a paypal account I was “promoted” to apply for a credit card. I ended up with an Amazon.com branded visa issued by Chase Bank with a whopping $300 limit. There was also a bonus credit of $25 for opening the account. Worked out great for a $10 purchase. Sat with a $15 credit balance for about 3 months before I made another online purchase. I’ve never had a problem with paypal. I would NEVER provide them with my bank account information.

I think the easiest way to do this is to purchase one of those debit gift cards, load it with however much money your online order will be, and then use that to make the payment. PayPal is, even without consideration to their anti-gun stance, not a good company to do business with. They are notorious for using obsolete cryptography and isn't the type of organization you want to give your financial data to. Additionally, should you purchase from a website that uses obsolete cryptography, and a third party is able to recover your financial data, they will be getting the number of that pre-loaded card instead of a credit card or ATM card attached to your account. That simple little step that takes only a few moments to setup and only a few bucks to load has just dramatically limited the damage.

PayPal is the financial arm of Ebay.

Not any more. The two companies parted ways last year.

Guilt by association still applies though, even if it's through prior association. Ask any number of former Nazi prison guards.
