Pedersoli Country Hunter or Kentucky

I am trying to deside on which rifle to get as a starter into muzzle loading rifles, these are both in 50 cal and percussion any suggestions welcome

Every gun has it's pro's and cons and people have their personal preferences.

While the Country Hunter has a nice 28" barrel length, it's twist rate is 1 in 34" which will definitely limit the accuracy if a person ever desires to shoot patched round balls from it. It smartly has adjustable sights, but with an overall weight of just under 6 lbs, that's not going to be a very steady rifle for shooting conical bullets that are heavier and recoil more than patched round balls. The Country Hunter is a very nice handy gun for someone who likes shooting conicals and some sabots for hunting and target shooting though.

The Kentucky is a much better value for the money because it has a medium twist rate for shooting both conicals and patched round balls, and it has a longer sighting plane for promoting accurate shooting. But it's traditional styling didn't allow it to have a factory adjustable rear sight installed. Its longer length barrel will mean that it will be slightly more difficult to load and clean, and that along with it's heavier weight will make it less handy to carry in the woods, but more steady to hold for target shooting. It's probably a better balanced rifle in .50 caliber too.

So as with choosing any new, first BP rifle there's trade offs and considerations to be decided on. I would like the Country Hunter a lot more if it had a medium twist barrel, and I would like the Kentucky more for the beginner if it had a shorter barrel.

IMO the bottom line is that the Kentucky is the better gun if a person ever wanted to shoot patched round balls with their 1st BP rifle.

I have had a Pedersoli Frontier 50 Flint and think the Kentucky hands down is a better choice UNLESS you are going to be hunting in really thick brush where the longer barrel will drive you nuts.

Articap, You are always right on with BP. The subject came up about the
Kentucky. I got a Penn. Pedersoli long rifle. I went to the Pedersoli web page
and it is called a Penn. Dixie. Mine is a percussion and has buck horn sight on it.
The one on the web has adjustable sights. I traded my Traditions Hawkins, my first BP gun, and a CVA flinter for it. It was at the rondy, It came with 575 440 round balls. I went to the practice range and shot it a few times. It did alright for the first time I used it. We have a club shoot Sunday. Tomorrow my wife and
I are going to practice. She got laid off again, so it is honey dew around the house today.
I'm still learning, which is great.........

I have the pedersoli kentucky rifle (percussion) and I absolutely love it! It is my first, and only black powder rifle at this time. What an introduction to BP, you'll love it.
