Unless I can get a screemin' deal on a Williams FoolProof FP-336 or a Lyman 66LA on ebay (which is not very likely, as the ones I've seen so far are selling for more than the purchase price for new), I'm most likely going to by a brandy new Williams WGRS or a Williams 5D....

I've read that the WGRS stands pretty tall off the receiver though, and I'm concerned I'll have difficulties sighting it in with my current front sight.
They offer a pretty good deal on a package with a Fire Eye front bead, but in the generic illustration the front sight looks really tall.

The 5D appears to mount lower, but I'm not sure if I'll need to have my receiver drilled and tapped or not. In the area where I'm guessing this will mount, there's a pin and two holes (dianonally located) with something threaded into them (plugs? or something internal....not sure).

Anyone out their mount any of these on a 336?

any feedback would be much appreciated....

Taller Front Sight

A taller sight package gives you somewhat better arc intersects for that few extra feet out.

Of course, if you elect to zero it farther out, you'll have spot in the middle of the arc where you're higher than usual. And by that point you're probably in scope country anyway.

For normal distance zero it shouldn't be an issue.

Can't speak to the aesthetics, though.

I can't remember the model but it's a Williams I got for my 336 because it specifcally said "uses standard front sight". It works fine. I got it from Midway.

What's the price difference between the sight you want to buy and the Lyman 66LA?

I have a 66LA on my one of my Marlin 1895SS .45-70s. I use the original front blade, and have even left the folding rear sight in place (folded when in use, of course) as a back up. The 66LA has a quick release button so you can pull it out when you want (for cleaning, etc). It's an aluminum and steel sight and I have found it to be extremely precise and robust. I think I bought mine from Midway some years ago for about $65. Not sure what it is now. But I highly recommend it; it's a great sight.

If you have an older Marlin with the holes drilled and tapped on the left side of the reciever, you can use either the 5D or the FoolProof. These allow the use of the original front sight post.

If you elect to use a WGRS you will need a taller front sight.

Not having the numbers at hand, I can't recall the exact height. I think it is in the realm of 0.480" tall.

I used a Williams Fire Sight to replace the original front sight on my Marlin. I replaced the WGRS with a 5D as I had an older rifle. I retained the higher front sigth though. The 5D easily accomadated it however.

I wish I'd had it this evening. I "drew blood" with my Savage M110 in .300 RUM. It drew blood on the doe I "blasted", and it "skinned" my nose as well drawing blood on both ends !!!

My .30/30 is much more "reasonable" on my end, but almost as "damaging" on the other end. Certainly enough to complete the "deal".

I have a FP-336 that is for most part brand new. I bought it and mounted it on my 336SS-35LTD, but never shot with it. I took it right back off and mounted a scope. I'll take $45 shipped. PM me if you're interested. Bill
